Springfield Exploration and Production Ltd., a Ghanaian oil exploration firm, is on the cusp of completing a high-stakes appraisal drilling at its Afina well in the West Cape Three Points (WCTP) Block 2, offshore Ghana.

This $60 million appraisal project, conducted by the advanced Deepsea Bollsta Rig, seeks to determine the production potential and commercial viability of the Afina well. The ongoing appraisal was mandated by an international arbitration court, ordering the integration of Springfield’s Afina discovery with the adjacent Sankofa field operated by ENI.

According to Willem Drogt, Well Test Officer on the project, the appraisal drilling has been largely successful, with the team on track to complete the project within the expected timeframe.

“It’s going forward. I can say it’s going forward. We are very happy about how the appraisal is progressing,” said Drogt during a media tour of the rig. He emphasized Springfield’s confidence in achieving the necessary data collection within a matter of days, despite some minor delays due to unexpected equipment issues, all of which have been rectified.

The high-anticipated outcome could mark a transformative shift for Ghana’s oil sector, potentially catapulting Springfield into the role of the first indigenous oil company to lead deep-water drilling activities in Ghana.

A successful appraisal would also support the unitization process with ENI’s Sankofa field, potentially fostering closer collaboration within Ghana’s oil and gas landscape.

Drogt added that the objective is to confirm the presence of hydrocarbons on the surface and assess the extent of the reservoir for Springfield. “Hopefully, it is economically worth to proceed in this field,” he noted, underscoring the importance of this data for Springfield’s future operational and financial decisions.

The appraisal drilling at Afina is being conducted using the Deepsea Bollsta Rig, a sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling rig owned by Northern Ocean Limited (NOL). The rig arrived in Ghana on October 18, 2024, and commenced operations two days later, on October 20.

The Bollsta Rig, renowned for its advanced deep-water drilling capabilities, is designed to operate in harsh environments, making it particularly suited for the challenging offshore conditions of the WCTP Block 2 area.

Local Partnerships and National Impact

Springfield’s ambitious project is conducted in collaboration with Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and GNPC Explorco, Ghana’s state-owned petroleum exploration companies. Together, they aim to advance Ghana’s national production goals by creating pathways for Ghanaian-led companies to operate on a global scale.

This partnership aligns with Ghana’s broader objectives to encourage local participation, boost economic growth, and ensure that the nation derives maximum benefit from its natural resources.

“The success of the appraisal drilling could potentially attract more investment into Ghana’s oil and gas sector, offering lucrative opportunities for local talent development, job creation, and overall economic uplift.”

Willem Drogt, Well Test Officer

The potential boost in oil production could enhance the government’s fiscal capacity to fund public services, infrastructure, and development initiatives that benefit the broader Ghanaian population.

With the Afina project on the brink of completion, the future looks promising for Ghana’s energy aspirations. The results of this appraisal, if favorable, could lay the foundation for Ghana’s emergence as a more self-sustaining oil producer, with Springfield at the helm as a pioneering national oil company in deep-water drilling.

The anticipated findings from the Afina well represent not just a milestone for Springfield but a potential catalyst for Ghana’s journey toward energy autonomy and economic resilience.

Springfield’s next steps will be eagerly watched as Ghana stands on the threshold of a new era in energy production—one where local player are not merely participants but leaders in the region’s quest for sustainable and profitable oil development.
