The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has moved to allay concerns over the security of gas supply across the sub-region, confirming that the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) remains fully operational despite a recent breach affecting one of the supply pipelines in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 12, 2025, the company emphasized that gas continues to be transported reliably to its customers in Ghana, Benin, and Togo. This follows widespread reports suggesting that the breach had forced a shutdown of the regional gas infrastructure.
According to the company, “the WAGP is fully operational and continues to transport natural gas across the sub-region,” despite the upstream disruption.
The statement added that WAPCo’s engineering and operational teams “implemented comprehensive measures to sustain gas flow through the WAGP,” highlighting the resilience of the pipeline system.
WAPCo clarified that while the incident impacted one of its major upstream supply lines, swift intervention and collaboration with key partners ensured that gas flow through the WAGP did not come to a halt.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability in a sector crucial to electricity generation and industrial activity across West Africa.
Swift Intervention and Stakeholder Collaboration

The breach, which occurred on one of the pipelines in Nigeria, raised fears of a potential energy shortfall in Ghana and its neighbors, countries that rely significantly on WAGP supplies for thermal power generation. A complete shutdown would have compounded existing energy vulnerabilities in the region.
But WAPCo indicated that an immediate coordinated response prevented what could have been a major crisis. Technicians, engineers, and logistical teams worked around the clock to ensure the system kept operating at safe and adequate levels.
The company acknowledged the critical role of regional partners in stabilizing the situation, noting that “our teams, working closely with partners and key stakeholders, have implemented comprehensive measures to sustain gas flow.”
This collaboration, the company stressed, is central to guaranteeing uninterrupted energy transport. The WAGP has long served as a backbone for cross-border energy cooperation, supplying fuel for electricity production and industrial consumption in multiple West African countries.
Appreciation for Support During a ‘Challenging Period’

WAPCo expressed gratitude to all partners who contributed technical support, resources, and expertise during the response phase. The company described the successful stabilization effort as proof of regional commitment to safeguarding critical energy infrastructure.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to all those who have contributed their expertise, resources, and support during this period.
“This collective effort ensures that the vital energy needs of the sub-region continue to be met, underpinning economic activities and the well-being of our communities.”

Although the affected pipeline in Nigeria is yet to be fully restored, WAPCo noted that alternative supply arrangements and system redundancies currently in place allow gas to continue flowing through the WAGP.
WAPCo also reiterated its longstanding commitment to safety, reliability, and technical integrity.
“We will continue to provide timely updates as our key partners work to restore full supply capacity from all sources and uphold our commitment to operational excellence.”

Critical Lifeline for West Africa’s Energy Security
The West African Gas Pipeline, which runs from Nigeria’s gas-producing region to Benin, Togo, and Ghana, is a strategic energy asset for the region. Any significant disruption to the pipeline often results in power supply challenges, making WAPCo’s assurance particularly important for governments, industries, and households.
WAPCo’s confirmation is expected to calm anxieties within the energy sector, particularly among power generation companies that rely on steady gas deliveries to maintain electricity supply.
As the region awaits full restoration of the Nigerian supply source, stakeholders will keenly monitor WAPCo’s next updates. For now, the company insists that the system is stable, and that energy flow remains secure.
