The Independent Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, who also aligns with the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, has praised President John Dramani Mahama’s ambitious “Big Push” infrastructure drive, describing it as a bold and unprecedented investment in Ghana’s future.

In a statement ahead of the President’s sod-cutting ceremony for the Wa–Han–Tumu–Navrongo Road on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the MP hailed the initiative as “the most ambitious infrastructure development agenda in Ghana’s history since the days of Kwame Nkrumah.”

According to him, the President’s vision will turn Ghana into one massive construction site, signaling a period of accelerated development and modernization that the country has long awaited.

The MP emphasized that the scale of President Mahama’s agenda extends across multiple sectors, including renewable energy, road infrastructure, seaport and airport modernization, as well as the construction of new hospitals, schools, and other public facilities.

He described the plan as “visionary,” noting that it represents not only physical development but also a renewal of national confidence in the potential of Ghanaian ingenuity and leadership.

“This visionary agenda will cover renewable energy projects, an extensive expansion of road networks, the modernization of seaports and airports, and the construction of new health and educational facilities across the country.”

Big Push’s Inconveniences

The Gomoa Central legislator acknowledged that the sheer magnitude of the “Big Push” will inevitably come with temporary discomforts — road closures, diversions, and delays — but urged citizens to show patience and understanding.

He called on Ghanaians to endure and rally behind President John Dramani Mahama as billions of Ghana cedis are invested in laying a solid foundation for a stronger, more resilient, and modern nation.

Mr. Asare Obeng highlighted some of the flagship projects expected under the program, including the full dualization of the Accra–Takoradi Highway — part of the Lagos–Abidjan corridor, recognized as the second busiest trade route in Africa.

Additionally, the Accra–Kumasi and Accra–Aflao highways are also set to be dualized, alongside numerous other critical road networks aimed at easing transportation and boosting economic connectivity across the country.

The $10 Billion Infrastructure Drive

The “Big Push” is a flagship initiative of President Mahama’s administration, designed to inject $10 billion into national infrastructure over five years — translating into a $2 billion annual investment.

It was a key pillar of the NDC’s 2024 election campaign and has since evolved into the cornerstone of President Mahama’s development policy since assuming office on January 7, 2025.

Since the start of his second term, President Mahama has already cut sod for three major road projects: the Dodowa–Afienya–Dawhenya Road, the Accra–Aflao–Ho–Hohoe dual carriageway, and the Takoradi–Cape Coast dualization project.

These, according to the MP, are early signs that the President is delivering on his promises of large-scale, transformative infrastructural renewal.

The upcoming Wa–Han–Tumu–Navrongo road project marks the fourth major sod-cutting event under the initiative. The project is expected to open up the Upper West and Upper East regions, facilitating trade and movement within the northern corridor while improving access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

For Mr. Asare Obeng, the “Big Push” goes beyond bricks and asphalt — it is about national rebirth. He believes the initiative will create thousands of jobs, stimulate local industries, and strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness within the sub-region.

Grand Transformation

“Ghana stands on the threshold of the grand transformation we have prayed for and dreamed of over the years,” he wrote, calling on all citizens to support the government’s vision with unity and optimism.

The MP’s endorsement underscores growing public enthusiasm for the initiative, particularly among communities that have long suffered from poor infrastructure and uneven development. It also signals strong parliamentary support from within the NDC Majority Caucus for Mahama’s flagship policies.

The President’s infrastructure strategy could redefine Ghana’s development trajectory, particularly if effectively implemented and financed. With an emphasis on job creation, regional equity, and public-private partnerships, the initiative is widely seen as a continuation of Mahama’s long-standing commitment to using infrastructure as a tool for economic transformation.

Mr. Asare Obeng ended his statement on an upbeat note, rallying Ghanaians to embrace the upcoming phase of national construction. “Forward ever!” he declared, echoing the spirit of progress and resilience that defined Ghana’s founding generation.
