The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has moved to reassure customers and stakeholders over the integrity of its ECG metering and billing system following recent concerns raised by some prepaid users.

In a statement signed by William Boateng, APR, Director of Communications, the power distributor said it had taken note of the issues circulating in the public domain and is confident in the reliability and accuracy of its electricity meters.

“The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has taken note of recent concerns raised by some prepaid customers and other stakeholders regarding our metering and billing systems.”

The assurance comes amid heightened public scrutiny of electricity billing patterns, particularly among prepaid customers who have questioned meter readings and consumption levels.

Rigorous Testing and International Standards

ECG emphasized that all meters deployed across the country undergo extensive testing and calibration before installation. According to the company, its quality assurance framework is aligned with both national and international standards.

“We wish to assure the general public that all electricity meters deployed by ECG undergo rigorous testing and calibration to ensure their accuracy.”

The company added that its meter testing laboratory is “state-of-the-art and comparable to leading facilities worldwide,” underscoring its commitment to deploying only certified and verified devices.

Beyond internal testing, ECG indicated that its meters are independently assessed by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). The standards body certifies all meters for compliance with approved benchmarks prior to deployment.

This dual-layer verification process, the company said, is designed to eliminate systemic inaccuracies and reinforce public confidence in electricity measurement systems.

Investigations into Customer Complaints

Despite expressing confidence in its systems, ECG acknowledged that some customers may have legitimate concerns that deserve attention.

“While ECG remains confident in the accuracy and reliability of its meters, we acknowledge that customers may have genuine concerns.”

In response, the company disclosed that investigations into complaints have already commenced. The move follows a directive from the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, urging transparency and swift resolution of reported anomalies.

ECG indicated that it is fully committed to probing all cases thoroughly to determine whether they stem from technical faults, usage patterns, or other underlying factors.

Energy sector analysts note that billing concerns often arise from changes in consumption behavior, tariff adjustments, or misunderstandings about how prepaid meters calculate usage. However, transparent investigations remain essential in maintaining trust between utility providers and consumers.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, ECG has once again formally requested the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to independently and randomly select and test our meters in the laboratory and in the field.”

The results of the independent assessment will be incorporated into ECG’s official report to the Energy Minister.

By inviting external validation, the company aims to demonstrate openness and reinforce public confidence in its metering infrastructure. Independent field testing is expected to examine meter performance under real operating conditions, complementing laboratory assessments.

Industry observers say such collaboration between utilities and regulatory bodies is critical in ensuring consumer protection and upholding service standards in the power distribution sector.

Commitment to Transparency and Service Delivery

ECG concluded its statement by reaffirming its dedication to responsive and accountable service delivery.

“ECG remains committed to responsive, transparent, and accountable service delivery, and we appreciate our valued customers and stakeholders for their continued support and cooperation.”

The power distributor encouraged customers with concerns about their bills or meter readings to channel complaints through official customer service platforms for prompt attention.

As electricity consumption continues to rise amid growing urbanization and industrial activity, the accuracy of metering systems remains central to fair billing and revenue sustainability within Ghana’s power sector.

The latest move by ECG signals an effort to strike a balance between defending the integrity of its ECG metering and billing system and acknowledging the importance of addressing consumer grievances transparently.

With independent testing underway and investigations ongoing, stakeholders will be watching closely for the outcome of the Ghana Standards Authority’s assessment and the Ministry’s review.
