Heath Goldfields Limited has announced the strategic appointment of Mr. John Ako as the new Project Manager, a move designed to spearhead the critical rehabilitation and advancement of the sulphide treatment plant at the Bogoso–Prestea Mine.

This high-level appointment aligns with the company’s broader objective to revitalize the historic asset, ensuring that the necessary technical leadership is in place to oversee the complex transition toward modern processing capabilities.

“The sulphide treatment plant is central to Heath Goldfields’ long-term strategic vision. Its development will unlock significant sulphide mineral resources, extend the operational life of the mine, and position Bogoso–Prestea as a modern, efficient, and sustainable mining operation.”

As the newly appointed lead, Mr. Ako is tasked with a mandate that is central to the long-term operational viability of the mine, specifically focusing on unlocking significant sulphide mineral resources that have remained largely untapped.

The development of this infrastructure is expected to catalyze a transformation of the Bogoso–Prestea site into a sustainable and highly efficient mining operation, effectively extending its lifespan while contributing to the economic and technical growth of Ghana’s extractive sector.

The selection of Mr. Ako underscores a “deliberate investment in world-class Ghanaian leadership” to manage the company’s most essential initiatives.

He brings a robust background in capital project execution, having previously served as a Project Manager at Asante Gold Corporation, where he successfully directed a similar sulphide recovery initiative.

His professional journey also includes valuable stints with industry giants such as Gold Fields Ghana and Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd., providing him with a comprehensive understanding of the unique operational and governance landscape within the Ghanaian mining territory.

Educationally, Mr. Ako is well-equipped for the complexities of mine infrastructure, holding both a Bachelor of Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Beyond his academic credentials, he is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) and Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP®).

These globally recognized certifications reflect a “commitment to excellence in project delivery” and ensure that the rehabilitation of the Bogoso-Prestea plant adheres to international standards of risk mitigation and operational efficiency.

Strategic Impact on Production and Mine Longevity

From a production standpoint, this appointment is a game-changer for Heath Goldfields’ output capacity.

The sulphide treatment plant is the “cornerstone in our structured plan” to fully restore the mine’s technical potential, moving beyond the current focus on oxide ores.

By successfully treating sulphide ores, the company can access deeper, higher-grade reserves that were previously inaccessible or difficult to process, which is estimated to significantly increase the annual gold pour and stabilize long-term production targets.

Transition to sulphide processing is the only viable path to ensuring the Bogoso–Prestea Mine remains a top-tier producer for decades to come.

By bringing in a lead with specific “expertise required for the successful delivery of sulphide processing infrastructure,”

Heath Goldfields is mitigating the technical risks associated with such a complex mechanical and chemical overhaul. This move not only secures the mine’s future but also bolsters the company’s ability to meet its socio-economic obligations to host communities and the state.

Future Outlook and Stakeholder Value

With the leadership of John Ako, the company expresses total confidence in its “ability to successfully deliver the sulphide treatment plant” and unlock the full technical and economic potential of this historic asset.

This project is viewed as a vital component of the “technical and economic potential” of the mine, which aims to create lasting value for stakeholders and the people of Ghana.

The successful completion of the plant will likely trigger a secondary wave of employment and local procurement opportunities as the mine ramps up its processing volumes.

By prioritizing indigenous talent and certified expertise, Heath Goldfields is positioning itself as a leader in the responsible and sustainable revival of Ghana’s distressed mining assets.

As the industry watches closely, the progress of this sulphide initiative will serve as a benchmark for the “full restoration” of historic mines through disciplined project management and local leadership.
