President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas vessel in South Korea aimed at strengthening Ghana’s energy supply chain and improving the reliability of LPG distribution in the country.
The vessel, named MT Asharami Ghana LPG carrier, was constructed for Sahara Energy Resources by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries at its shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.
The commissioning ceremony formed part of the President’s working visit to the Asian country and highlighted growing cooperation between Ghana and international energy partners.
According to President Mahama, the new vessel represents an important investment that will help secure Ghana’s LPG supply while strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure.
“Today we celebrate not only engineering excellence but also the power of partnership,” the President said during the commissioning ceremony. He described the project as a significant step toward ensuring stable energy supplies for Ghana and the wider West African region.
Strategic Investment in Energy Infrastructure
President Mahama explained that the acquisition of the LPG vessel would enhance the efficiency of Ghana’s LPG supply chain while helping the country respond to rising energy demand.

He noted that the vessel will operate under the Ghanaian flag and will be dedicated to supplying LPG to Ghana, which will improve supply security and reduce logistical challenges in transporting the fuel.
The President said the vessel will also contribute to stabilising LPG prices through more efficient transportation and delivery systems, adding that “Ghana, like many of our neighbouring countries, recognises the transformative potential of LPG in supporting socio-economic development”.
He added that investments of this nature are essential for building what he described as a just and inclusive energy transition that benefits both current and future generations.
Collaboration Between Global and Regional Partners
President Mahama commended the companies and partners that played a role in the development of the new LPG carrier, including Sahara Energy Group and West African Gas Limited.
According to him, the project demonstrates what can be achieved when investment, innovation, and collaboration are combined to address infrastructure needs across the region.
He said partnerships between African energy companies and global industry leaders are critical to strengthening energy systems and expanding regional markets.

President Mahama explained that such collaborations also help unlock economic opportunities while improving the resilience of Africa’s energy supply networks.
The president noted that investments in modern energy infrastructure play a key role in improving the reliability and sustainability of energy supply across the continent.
Expanding Regional Energy Logistics
The MT Asharami Ghana LPG carrier is described as a modern dual fuel and fully refrigerated LPG vessel designed to transport large volumes of liquefied petroleum gas safely and efficiently.
Its deployment significantly expands LPG transportation capacity for Sahara Energy Resources and supports the company’s efforts to strengthen energy logistics across West Africa.
Industry observers say the addition of the vessel to the region’s LPG fleet represents a strategic move that could improve the flow of petroleum products across several African markets.
The expansion of LPG transport capacity is also expected to improve supply flexibility, particularly for countries that rely on imports to meet domestic demand.
For Ghana, the vessel provides an additional logistical channel that could help ensure a more consistent supply of LPG for households and businesses.

LPG’s Role in Africa’s Energy Transition
President Mahama also highlighted the growing importance of LPG as African countries pursue cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
He explained that LPG offers a practical alternative to traditional fuels such as charcoal, firewood, and kerosene, which remain widely used in many households across the continent.
“For millions of households across Africa, LPG offers a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels such as charcoal, firewood, and kerosene”.

He added that expanding access to LPG can contribute to improved public health outcomes by reducing indoor air pollution. The wider adoption of LPG also supports environmental protection by helping reduce deforestation caused by excessive reliance on firewood and charcoal.
According to the president, the development of modern LPG infrastructure is therefore essential for advancing Africa’s broader energy transition goals.
Strengthening Energy Security and Economic Opportunities
President Mahama noted that many African countries, including Ghana, rely on imported LPG to supplement domestic production. He explained that investments such as the commissioning of the MT Asharami Ghana LPG carrier improve supply security by allowing countries to diversify their sources of supply and strengthen international trade connections.

The development of energy transport infrastructure also creates opportunities for employment and supports the growth of regional energy markets. President Mahama emphasised that strategic partnerships and long term investments will be essential in building a reliable and sustainable energy system across Africa.
“Through strategic investments and forward-looking partnerships such as the commissioning of MT Asharami Ghana, we are taking practical steps to enhance energy security for Ghana, West Africa, and Africa as a whole”.

The commissioning of the vessel forms part of Sahara Energy Group’s broader downstream fleet expansion programme aimed at improving the efficiency, safety, and reliability of LPG transportation.
Company officials say the initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening energy infrastructure while supporting sustainable development in West Africa.
