The Ministry of Health has suspended the Principal of the College of Nursing in Nkanchina, Mr. Fredrick Anaba, following allegations of over-admission of students and the introduction of academic programmes without official approval.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, is part of a broader administrative investigation launched by the Ministry to establish the facts surrounding the admissions and programme management at the institution.

Officials say the move underscores government’s commitment to enforcing regulations governing health training institutions across the country.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, the decision follows a formal query sent to the Principal on 19 February 2026 regarding the institution’s admissions for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The query was issued after concerns emerged that the college may have admitted more students than the approved quota and introduced academic programmes that had not been authorised by the appropriate regulatory bodies.

After reviewing the response submitted by Mr. Anaba, the Ministry determined that the matter required a comprehensive administrative investigation.

“The Ministry of Health has suspended the Principal of the College of Nursing, Nkanchina, Mr. Fredrick Anaba, with immediate effect pending a comprehensive administrative investigation into alleged over-admission of students and the unauthorized introduction of new academic programmes”.

As part of the immediate measures, the suspended Principal has been directed to hand over the administration and management of the institution to the Acting Vice Principal.

The Ministry indicated that the step is intended to ensure the smooth running of academic and administrative activities at the college while the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities say the decision will prevent disruptions to teaching and learning while allowing investigators to examine the allegations independently.

The Ministry emphasised that the suspension forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight and ensure strict compliance with established policies across all health training institutions.

Admission quotas for nursing and other health training school,s are determined based on infrastructure capacity, availability of tutors, clinical training resources and national workforce planning in the health sector.

The Ministry noted that exceeding approved admission quotas could place pressure on teaching resources, compromise training standards and affect the quality of healthcare professionals graduating from the institutions.

It also warned that the introduction of academic programmes without proper authorisation undermines regulatory frameworks designed to maintain academic quality and professional standards.

Government’s Commitment to Quality Training

Officials say maintaining high standards in health training institutions is essential to ensuring the competence of healthcare workers who will eventually serve in hospitals and clinics across the country.

The Ministry reiterated that it remains committed to enforcing regulations governing admissions and programme accreditation in all public and private health training institutions.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to upholding strict compliance with admission quotas and approved academic programmes across all health training institutions”.

Health training institutions in Ghana operate under guidelines set by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with regulatory bodies responsible for professional accreditation and training standards.

These institutions play a crucial role in producing nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals needed to support the country’s health system.

Over the years, the Ministry has introduced reforms aimed at expanding access to health training while maintaining quality standards in education and clinical practice.

However, officials have consistently emphasised that expansion must be guided by approved quotas and accreditation procedures to avoid overstretching training facilities.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The Ministry stated that the administrative investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the admissions process and the alleged introduction of unapproved academic programmes.

Investigators are expected to review admission records, institutional approvals and compliance with regulatory procedures. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether further disciplinary or administrative actions will be taken.

The Ministry assured the public that further updates will be provided once the investigation has been completed. The statement announcing the suspension was signed by Isaac Ofei Baah, Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Health, and dated 12 March 2026.
