United Kingdom has launched a new partnership with Movember and People’s Health Trust to enhance men’s health.

This partnership is designed to address persistent disparities in healthy life expectancy, particularly among men in disadvantaged communities who continue to experience poorer health outcomes and shorter lifespans compared to those in more affluent areas.

The programme introduces the Men’s Health Community Fund, backed by £3 million in government investment, with additional contributions from the partner organizations bringing the total funding to £6.3 million. This pooled investment will support local projects that operate within communities, rather than relying solely on traditional clinical or hospital-based interventions.

Another significant feature of this new partnership is the emphasizes on Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organizations, which are expected to play a leading role in designing and delivering interventions. These organizations are often better positioned to connect with individuals who may not typically engage with formal healthcare systems.

According to Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting too many men across the country are living shorter, less healthy lives particularly those in our most disadvantaged communities.

“This new partnership will help men get the support they need in the places they feel most comfortable, their communities, among people they trust. By working with expert charities and local organizations, we can reach the men who are too often missed by traditional services and help them take better care of their mental and physical health.”

He added that, the partnership is a key step in delivering the “first ever Men’s Health Strategy and driving forward our ambition to halve the gap in healthy life expectancy between the richest and poorest areas.”

Per the report, the grant will support a variety of community-based projects targeting men and boys aged 16 and above. These projects are expected to address key moments in life where individuals may be particularly vulnerable or in need of additional support.

Examples include programmes designed for new fathers adjusting to parenthood, initiatives addressing loneliness and social isolation, and services aimed at improving engagement with health systems among younger men.

Support will also extend to men in employment, those out of work, and individuals transitioning into retirement, each group facing distinct challenges that can influence both mental and physical well-being.

Another significant aspect of this initiative is its commitment to generating robust evidence to inform future policy and programme design. Evaluation will be conducted with support from the National Institute for Health and Care Research, ensuring that the outcomes of funded projects are systematically assessed.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of Movember UK, Michelle Terry, almost every community has been impacted by losing men they care about too young, stating that “Movember have been funding work going to where men are for over 20 years.”

“This partnership will scale and learn from incredible organizations supporting men in their communities, whilst embedding care that works for men in health systems. We look forward to working together with government, health services, and our friends in the third sector to grow these partnerships and drive forward the Men’s Health Strategy for England.”

Alongside providing direct support, the programme is designed to identify effective approaches, document what works, and disseminate successful models so they can be scaled and implemented in other parts of the country. This learning-focused element ensures that impactful local projects do not remain isolated but instead contribute to wider improvements in men’s health services nationwide.

Government Boosts Men’s Mental Health Efforts

The Men’s Health Strategy set out the bold plan to take comprehensive action to tackle the specific physical and mental health challenges men and boys face every day.

One of the most pressing issues being addressed is male suicide, which remains one of the leading causes of death among men under 50, with men accounting for the vast majority of suicide cases.

In response, additional government investment of £3.6 million over three years is being directed toward suicide prevention initiatives focused on middle-aged men in communities across England, particularly in areas where the risk is highest and where deprivation levels are often significant.

These initiatives are intended to reduce the barriers that prevent men from seeking help, including stigma surrounding mental health, limited awareness of available services, and uncertainty about how to access support.

John Hume, Chief Executive of People’s Health Trust, further highlighted the organization’s role in the initiative, noting that the Trust is proud to partner with the Government and Movember on this innovative programme. He explained that their “expertise in working with communities to improve health outcomes ensures we reach men at the sharp end of poor health.”
