The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has completed construction of a state-of-the-art Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre, positioning the facility as the first public-sector health institution in Ghana to operate a specialist fertility centre, according to the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

Announcing the development, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo said the completed centre is expected to become fully operational by the end of August 2026, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s expansion of specialised clinical services.

According to Dr Baidoo, physical works on the ART Centre have now been finalised, clearing the way for its operationalisation within the course of the month.

He indicated that preparatory activities toward opening the facility to patients had already begun, with staff commencing work at the centre in the days immediately preceding the announcement.

First Public Sector Fertility Centre in Ghana

Dr Baidoo was emphatic about the historic significance of the new facility, noting that its completion places Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital ahead of all other public health institutions in the country in offering specialised fertility treatment services.

Until now, assisted reproductive technology services in Ghana have largely been concentrated within the private health sector, making access to such treatment costly and limited for many Ghanaians who rely on public healthcare.

“By this feat, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has emerged as the first public sector health facility to boast of a state-of-the-art specialist fertility centre in the country.”

Alongside the ART Centre announcement, Dr Baidoo also highlighted ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration between the hospital and the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service.

According to him, this engagement is specifically aimed at supporting sustained clinical mentorship and capacity-building initiatives, reflecting a broader institutional push to strengthen technical expertise within the region’s health workforce.

He said this partnership forms part of the hospital’s wider strategy to extend its clinical knowledge and specialist capacity beyond its own walls, supporting improvements in healthcare delivery across facilities within the Ashanti Region more broadly.

 Addressing A Long-Standing Access Gap

The establishment of a public-sector fertility centre is likely to be seen as a notable development for patients who have previously had to rely exclusively on private facilities for fertility treatment in Ghana, a route that has often placed such services out of reach for many due to cost.

By introducing ART services within the public health system, KATH’s new centre is expected to widen access to fertility treatment for a broader segment of the population, particularly patients who would otherwise be unable to afford private-sector alternatives.

While Dr Baidoo did not disclose specific details regarding the pricing structure or full scope of services to be offered at the new centre, its positioning as a public-sector facility suggests it is intended to make assisted reproductive technology more financially accessible compared to existing private options in the country.

Part Of Broader Institutional Growth At KATH

The ART Centre’s completion adds to a series of developments at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as the institution continues to expand its range of specialised services.

Taken together with the strengthened partnership with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, the announcement reflects a broader institutional push toward enhancing both direct patient care and the hospital’s role in supporting clinical capacity building across the region.

With the centre expected to commence operations before the end of August, attention will likely turn to how quickly the facility begins receiving patients, and how its services are structured to ensure accessibility for Ghanaians in need of fertility treatment through the public health system.
