A United Nations peacekeeper has passed on, and another has been injured after a projectile detonated at a position operated by the United Nations Interim Force(UNIFIL) in Lebanon in southern Lebanon, highlighting the increasing risks faced by international personnel amid rising regional tensions.
According to UNIFIL, the incident took place near Adchit Al Qusayr, where the explosion struck a UNIFIL position, resulting in the death of one peacekeeper and injuries to another, including a member of the Indonesian contingent deployed under the mission’s mandate leading the mission to initiate an investigation aimed at determining the origin of the projectile and reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the blast.
It directly affected UN personnel and infrastructure, raising serious concerns about the security conditions in an area that has experienced growing instability and sporadic hostilities.
The United Nations expressed deep sorrow over the loss, reiterating the principle that individuals serving in peacekeeping roles must be afforded protection, stating, “No one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace.”
Although UN personnel operate under a neutral mandate designed to support stability and monitor compliance with international agreements, the evolving security situation in parts of the Middle East has increasingly exposed them to risks linked to broader regional conflicts.
This incident has drawn firm condemnation from the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, who described it as part of a pattern of recent events that have placed peacekeepers in jeopardy.

“I strongly condemn Sunday’s incident during which an Indonesian peacekeeper of UNIFIL was killed amidst hostilities between Israel & Hizbullah. Another Indonesian peacekeeper was seriously injured in the same incident. My deepest condolences to the family, friends & colleagues of the peacekeeper who died & to Indonesia. I wish a full & fast recovery to the injured peacekeeper. This is just one of a number of recent incidents that have jeopardized the safety & security of peacekeepers.”
António Guterres
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric further noted that the explosion occurred within a broader context of escalating tensions in the Middle East, adding, “This is one of a number of incidents that have jeopardized the safety and security of peacekeepers over the past 48 hours.”
The Secretary-General also indicated that any attack on peacekeepers is unacceptable and must be subject to thorough investigation, with accountability determined once the facts are fully established.
This is because, under international humanitarian law, peacekeepers are recognized as protected individuals, and any deliberate or indiscriminate attack against them constitutes a serious violation of international norms. Such actions may, in certain circumstances, be classified as war crimes, particularly when they occur in regions governed by established legal frameworks such as UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Adopted in 2006, this resolution was intended to bring an end to hostilities between armed groups in Lebanon and Israeli forces and remains central to the operational mandate of UNIFIL.
In light of the incident, the United Nations has urged all parties involved in the wider regional conflict to exercise restraint and fully comply with their obligations under international law. Maintaining the safety of UN personnel, as well as ensuring their ability to move freely and carry out their responsibilities without obstruction, is essential for the continuation of peacekeeping efforts in the region.
Heightened Security Challenges in Southern Lebanon

In recent months, the security situation along the Lebanon-Israel border has shown signs of deterioration, with an increase in cross-border fire, aerial activity, and localized exchanges between armed groups contributing to a more volatile environment. These developments have heightened concerns about the stability of the region and the ability of peacekeeping forces to operate safely amid ongoing tensions.
The World Health Organization has also reported additional incidents affecting humanitarian personnel in southern Lebanon, including the killing of a paramedic in an attack on an ambulance in Bint Jbeil, along with the destruction of a medical warehouse.
“Israel’s expanding military operations in southern Lebanon have resulted in the death of yet another health worker today. Israel’s expanding military operations in southern Lebanon have resulted in the death of yet another health worker today.”
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus further warned that “attacks on healthcare personnel and facilities must cease immediately,” adding, “this cannot be the norm.”
He emphasized that “health workers are safeguarded under international humanitarian law and should not be targeted.”
