Sachet water price remains unchanged following a government intervention that halted a planned increase set to take effect on Monday, April 6, 2026. The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry announced the decision after engaging key industry players, including the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP).
The move comes as relief to millions of Ghanaians who rely on sachet water as a primary source of drinking water, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas.
Government Halts Planned Price Increase
The Ministry, in an official press release dated April 6, confirmed that the anticipated price adjustment has been suspended following cooperation from industry stakeholders.
“The Ministry… commends [GPMA and NASPAWAP] for their cooperation and suspending the planned price adjustment,” the statement said.It further assured the public that “the price of sachet water will not increase today,” emphasising that consumers can continue to purchase sachet water at the current price.
The intervention follows earlier announcements by producers indicating a planned increase in prices due to rising production costs. Industry groups had proposed a new price structure, with a maximum retail price of GH¢15 per bag of sachet water. The proposed increment had sparked concern among consumers and small businesses, given the widespread dependence on sachet water across the country.
Rising Production Costs Behind Initial Price Hike
Producers had cited a global shortage of polymers, a key raw material used in plastic packaging, as the main reason for the intended price increase. The situation has been exacerbated by global supply chain disruptions and rising input costs.
According to industry sources, these challenges have significantly increased production expenses, making it difficult for manufacturers to maintain existing prices. “The rising costs have made it challenging for manufacturers to maintain current prices,” the association noted in an earlier statement.

The proposed adjustment was also aimed at ensuring sustainability within the sector and maintaining the steady supply of safe drinking water to the public. However, government intervention has temporarily paused the implementation, pending further consultations.
Stakeholder Engagement to Address Sector Challenges
As part of efforts to find a lasting solution, the Ministry has scheduled a meeting with industry stakeholders on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.The meeting will involve leadership from GPMA and NASPAWAP and is expected to focus on addressing challenges facing the sachet water production sector.
“The Ministry will meet… to urgently address challenges facing the sector,” the statement indicated.
Authorities say the engagement is aimed at ensuring market stability while balancing the interests of producers and consumers. The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with trade associations to resolve issues promptly and maintain price stability in the market.
Balancing Consumer Protection and Industry Sustainability
The decision to keep sachet water prices unchanged highlights the government’s effort to strike a balance between protecting consumers and sustaining local industries. Sachet water remains one of the most affordable and accessible sources of drinking water in Ghana, making price stability a critical issue for households.
At the same time, producers continue to face operational challenges linked to global economic pressures, including rising costs of raw materials, transportation, and energy. Experts note that sustained dialogue between government and industry stakeholders will be essential in addressing these issues without placing undue burden on consumers
Broader Implications for the Market
The suspension of the price increase is expected to provide short-term relief to consumers, particularly low-income households and small-scale vendors who depend heavily on sachet water.
However, the situation also underscores deeper structural challenges within the sector, including reliance on imported raw materials and vulnerability to global market fluctuations. The outcome of the upcoming stakeholder meeting will likely shape future pricing decisions and policy directions for the industry.
The decision to keep sachet water prices unchanged offers immediate relief but also signals the need for long-term solutions to stabilise the sector. As discussions between government and producers continue, stakeholders will be looking for measures that address rising production costs while maintaining affordability for consumers.
The next steps taken by the Ministry and industry players will be critical in determining whether the current price stability can be sustained in the months ahead.
