Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) Samuel Basintale Amadu has unveiled a comprehensive package of welfare and infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving the working conditions of officers within the Ghana Immigration Service
This package is designed to fundamentally transform the working conditions of officers, ensuring that those charged with safeguarding the nation’s borders are as well-equipped as they are motivated.
The announcement was the centerpiece of a high-profile, two-day working visit to several critical Immigration commands within the Greater Accra Region.
The CGI engaged in candid dialogue with personnel, seeking to understand the ground-level realities of their service while assessing the overall efficiency of the regional commands.

Recognizing that the strength of any security institution lies in its human capital, CGI Amadu placed welfare at the heart of his address.
He acknowledged the myriad challenges that officers encounter dailyfrom the physical strain of border patrols to the financial pressures of modern life. To combat these, the CGI introduced a multi-layered support system.
Mobility emerged as a primary focus. To address the logistical hurdles faced by staff, the Service has committed to the provision of dedicated buses to facilitate smoother transportation to and from duty posts.
Furthermore, the CGI revealed strategic partnerships with private sector entities to provide financing options for motorbikes and tricycles, specifically tailored for interested officers. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the personal and professional mobility of the rank and file.
Financial security was the second pillar of the welfare announcement. The CGI officially launched a series of accessible, low-interest loan schemes, providing a reliable financial cushion for officers.
This was complemented by the establishment of a mutual health insurance scheme, a critical safety net designed to provide comprehensive medical support for personnel and their families, ensuring that health concerns do not become a barrier to service.
Modernizing The GIS Footprint

Beyond personal welfare, the CGI underscored a massive commitment to upgrading the Service’s physical infrastructure. He highlighted the ongoing construction of modern, purpose-built office complexes across seven different regions. These facilities are intended to replace aging structures and provide a high-tech environment conducive to modern migration management and border surveillance.
While these projects are reaching completion, the CGI has implemented a new, efficient shift system. This operational change is designed to optimize the use of existing facilities and personnel, ensuring that the Service maintains maximum efficiency and presence during this transitional period of growth.
However, with these enhancements comes a firm call for professional discipline. The CGI was unequivocal regarding the standards expected of every officer within the Service. He emphasized that the introduction of better welfare must be met with a renewed commitment to punctuality and accountability.
“The prudent use of official resources is a cornerstone of our mission. Let it be known that any misuse of these resources or failure to uphold our professional standards will attract appropriate and swift sanctions.”

Addressing concerns regarding career longevity and advancement, the CGI revealed that a significant revision of the GIS establishment structure is currently underway. This restructuring is aimed at ensuring that promotions are not only frequent but transparently aligned with the actual availability of vacancies, creating a clear and fair career path for every dedicated officer.
The CGI’s tour included stops at the Adenta and Legon sectors, as well as the Abokobi District Command, where he personally inspected facilities and commended the staff for their resilience. He urged them to remain committed to the vision of a “resilient Immigration Service” that stands as a leader in migration management and excellence in national security.
