The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reaffirmed its commitment to public well-being and environmental protection by taking part in a sanitation exercise in the Jomoro Municipality.
The initiative, which formed part of a broader effort to educate public on fire prevention, brought together the Elubo Fire Command, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Assembly members, and scores of residents in a coordinated effort to improve cleanliness and reduce environmental hazards.
The exercise took five hours, and it involved mainly desilting choked gutters and clearing rubbish from the main streets within the Elubo District. The activity aimed to resolve long-standing sanitation challenges that often lead to flooding, especially during the rainy season.
The GNFS’s involvement in the exercise forms part of broader measures aimed at enhancing public safety that go beyond firefighting. By engaging in preventive initiatives like sanitation campaigns, the Service continues to demonstrate its dedication to safeguarding both lives and property.
Officers from the Elubo Fire Command worked very hard in clearing choked gutters and ensuring a clean and safe environment for all. They interacted with residents and offered practical guidance on the need for maintaining a clean and safe environment.

District Fire Officer, DOI Dawood Nuhu, in his speech, stressed the need for community partnership in disaster prevention. He assured the Municipal Chief Executive and residents that the GNFS remains fully equipped and ready to address emergencies while also focusing on proactive measures that reduce risks before they worsen.
He opined that blocked gutters and poor waste disposal practices significantly increase the likelihood of flooding, which can lead to property damage, displacement, and loss of life. He reiterated that maintaining clean drainage systems is one of the most effective ways to prevent such disasters.
Community Educated On Fire Safety Measures
DOI Nuhu also used the opportunity to educate the community on critical fire safety practices. He charged households and business owners to frequently check electrical installations, avoid congested power outlets, and ensure that flammable materials are kept safely. He emphasized that fire outbreaks often come from avoidable causes, and greater awareness can help lessen occurrences.
“The team educated congregants on fire prevention and basic emergency response. Key risks highlighted included unattended cooking, careless burning and improper use of naked flames.”

As the rainy season approaches, the District Fire Officer called on residents to strengthen their efforts in keeping their environs clean. He called for constant sanitation activities rather than limiting such efforts to selected national events.
DOI Dawood Nuhu went on to further charge the public to report fire hazards on time and cooperate with emergency responders when incidents occur.
The Municipal Chief Executive, who also took part in the cleanup exercise, showed excitement for the massive attendance and how the people cooperated. He applauded the Ghana National Fire Service for its active involvement, describing it as a clear demonstration of leadership and obligation to public well-being.
The MCE pointed out that cleanliness is a top priority for the municipality because a dirty environment can negatively impact public health and undermine development. He reiterated the assembly’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility.
Residents who took part in the exercise also expressed excitement about the outcome, asserting that the presence of the Fire Service added energy and liveliness to the exercise. They acknowledged the importance of maintaining clean surroundings and pledged to adopt better waste management practices going forward.

The National Sanitation Day initiative continues to serve as a significant platform for rallying societies across the country to address environmental concerns. In Jomoro, the collaboration between the GNFS, local authorities, and residents has set a good example of what can be accomplished through shared action.
After the exercise, residents had a transformed mindset and were ready to contribute their quota to make the community progress by ensuring their surroundings are neat. The event not only upgraded the physical environment but also helped cement the relationship between the citizens and officials.
