British Armed Forces are set to benefit from significantly expanded access to entertainment, news and digital content under a new long-term agreement between the Ministry of Defence and BFBS, aimed at enhancing morale and connectivity for personnel stationed around the world.
The 10-year contract renewal will see BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service) broaden its services to reflect evolving media consumption habits, offering everything from live sport and films to podcasts, gaming and defence-focused news content.
The agreement is designed to ensure that service personnel and their families can remain connected and informed regardless of location, including in remote or operational environments.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, indicated that, “BFBS are at the heart of service life, providing our personnel with access to secure, trusted entertainment, ranging from live football matches to the latest movie releases, and keeping our people engaged in Forces life from gaming to developing news.”
“This 10-year contract renewal demonstrates our long-term commitment to our people and will ensure they have media access relevant to their needs, devices and interests, wherever they serve. Our message to our Armed Forces community is clear: this government is on your side.”

BFBS, a military charity and media organisation, has long played a central role in supporting the wellbeing of armed forces communities by delivering trusted content and maintaining a connection to life back home.
Under the new deal, the organisation will invest in upgraded technology and platforms to improve accessibility and security, while also diversifying its entertainment offerings to reflect the changing preferences of personnel.
The agreement comes as part of a broader effort by the UK government to strengthen support for military communities, alongside increased defence spending projected to reach 2.6% of GDP from April 2027 the largest sustained rise since the Cold War.
Moreover, the contract builds on more than 80 years of BFBS operations, dating back to its first broadcasts during the Second World War. As a registered charity, BFBS is able to secure premium content partnerships that may not be accessible through standard commercial arrangements, including international sports coverage and entertainment programming tailored for overseas audiences.

Ben Chapman, BFBS CEO said BFBS is pleased to secure the new agreement with the MOD, which will allow it to continue connecting UK Armed Forces personnel and their families through reliable and innovative media services over the coming decade.
“We are living in complex geopolitical times, with Defence at the top of the global agenda, and never has the media landscape been more disrupted.
“BFBS plays a vital role in supporting the operational readiness and welfare of our military wherever they are serving, and we help to maintain a healthy democracy by ensuring that all those who serve our country have access to trusted, relevant, and secure media.”

Wider Support Measures and Modernisation of Forces Welfare

The renewed contract forms part of a broader package of initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for service personnel and their families. These include plans to acquire and refurbish nearly 40,000 military family homes, as well as the introduction of a childcare support scheme that could save eligible families in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland up to £6,000 per child annually.
In addition, the government is establishing a new independently appointed Armed Forces Commissioner, tasked with investigating concerns raised directly by service personnel and their families, strengthening accountability and support mechanisms within the military system.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the expansion of BFBS services reflects the increasing importance of digital connectivity and access to information in maintaining morale, particularly for personnel deployed overseas or in isolated environments.

The integration of gaming, on-demand streaming and mobile-compatible platforms is expected to modernise how content is delivered, aligning military welfare services with broader technological trends.
BFBS currently provides a wide range of services, including up to 16 core television channels via set-top boxes and more than 30 channels through its online player for overseas users. The new agreement is expected to further enhance these capabilities, ensuring that personnel can access entertainment and news seamlessly across devices.
The Ministry of Defence has emphasised that maintaining strong communication and access to trusted media is not only a welfare issue but also contributes to operational effectiveness, helping personnel stay informed, engaged and connected throughout their service.
As the nature of military deployments evolves, initiatives such as this will play a key role in supporting the resilience and readiness of the UK Armed Forces community worldwide.
