King Charles III will go ahead with his planned state visit to the United States, Buckingham Palace has confirmed, despite heightened security concerns following a shooting incident near a White House event attended by Donald Trump.
The King, accompanied by Queen Camilla, is set to begin a four-day visit aimed at reinforcing ties between the United Kingdom and the United States, even as diplomatic relations face pressure over recent geopolitical disagreements. The visit will include a private meeting with President Trump, a formal programme of engagements in Washington, and an address to Congress marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.
Concerns over the visit grew over the weekend, when a gunman opened fire on security officers near the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, causing Secret Service officials to hurriedly escort the president from the location.
This incident generated significant concerns about the security plans for the visiting British monarch, prompting urgent talks between UK and US officials.
According to Acting US Attorney General, Todd Blanche, police believe the attack was directed at the president and members of his administration. Despite the gravity of the situation, officials have acted quickly to reassure both governments and the public that there is no ongoing danger to interrupt the visit.
Moreover, in an interview, US President Donald Trump dismissed fears about the King’s safety, saying, “I think it’s fantastic; he’ll be extremely protected. “The White House grounds are extremely safe.” He also stated that there are no evidence of any more threats against him or other officials.
Buckingham Palace also confirmed the decision following consultations across both sides of the Atlantic.
“Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of government, we can confirm the state visit by their majesties will proceed as planned. The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the visit getting underway.”

While the overall programme remains intact, palace sources indicated that there could be minor adjustments to certain engagements as a precautionary measure. These changes are expected to be operational rather than substantive, ensuring that the visit proceeds smoothly without altering its core diplomatic objectives.
Diplomatic Priorities Amid Tensions

The visit comes at a sensitive time for UK-US relations, which have been strained by differences over the conflict involving Iran and broader foreign policy disagreements. Despite these tensions, both governments appear keen to use the visit as an opportunity to reaffirm longstanding ties between the two countries.
King Charles has been kept fully informed of developments following the shooting and was said to be relieved that President Trump, Melania Trump, and other attendees at the event were unharmed. Palace sources also confirmed that the King and Queen had privately reached out to the president and first lady to express their sympathies in the aftermath of the incident.
Following the startling events at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also sent the President and First Lady his best wishes. He wished the wounded officer a quick recovery and conveyed his delight that the President and First Lady were unharmed.
According to British officials, the monarchy is important for maintaining institutional and symbolic ties between the two countries.
The King’s address to Congress is expected to be one of the defining moments of the visit, reflecting both the historical relationship between the UK and the US and their ongoing cooperation on global issues. The timing of the visit, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of American independence, adds further symbolic weight.
At the same time, coordination between UK and US security agencies has intensified. Senior UK minister Darren Jones confirmed that British government would continue to work closely with their American counterparts to ensure the visit is conducted safely. He also noted that extensive discussions were already underway and would continue in the days leading up to and during the visit.
The King’s itinerary includes a combination of high-level political meetings and ceremonial engagements, designed to highlight the depth of the relationship between the two countries. While the White House meeting and congressional address are central to the visit, additional events are expected to highlight cultural and historical connections.
