Hon. John Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, conducted a late-night inspection of the Akosombo Substation to personally oversee the critical restoration efforts following a major fire incident that severely damaged the facility’s control room.

The visit served as both a strategic assessment of the destruction, which resulted in the loss of over 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, and a morale-boosting engagement with the technical teams on the ground.

“I have been deeply impressed by their unwavering commitment, courage, and professionalism in the face of such a challenging situation. I wish to sincerely commend these hardworking men and women for their resilience and sacrifice. I also want to reassure them of Government’s full support as they work to restore operations.”

The fire, which broke out recently, has created a significant strain on the country’s energy infrastructure, prompting an urgent, around-the-clock mobilization of specialized personnel.

During his visit, Hon. Jinapor engaged directly with the engineers and technical staff who are working under extremely demanding conditions to stabilize and restore the grid.

By witnessing these efforts firsthand, the Minister is reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources and logistical support required to expedite the repair process and minimize the disruption to national power supply.

The Minister’s presence at the site serves as a vital catalyst for the restoration works.

By interacting with the workforce, Hon. Jinapor is not only acknowledging their “tireless efforts and strong sense of duty” but is also ensuring that any bureaucratic bottlenecks preventing rapid repair are addressed in real-time.

This high-level visibility helps maintain the momentum of the teams working in shifts, as it signals that the recovery of the Akosombo Substation is a top priority for the highest levels of government.

The damage to the control room, while extensive, is being managed through a phased approach involving the isolation of damaged units and the rerouting of power via alternative channels.

Experts note that when leadership physically engages with front-line technical teams during infrastructure crises, it fosters a “unified operational environment,” which is essential for safely accelerating complex electrical repairs.

The collaboration between the Ministry, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders, as emphasized by the Minister, is crucial to ensuring that the restoration process is both swift and technically sound.

A Message of Public Assurance

Addressing the general public, Hon. Jinapor emphasized that the government is fully aware of the anxiety caused by the power deficit and is “doing everything within our power” to stabilize the supply.

The Minister’s commitment to transparency regarding the restoration progress aims to manage public expectations while the technical teams work to bring the affected units back online.

As restoration efforts intensify, the focus remains on upholding “the highest standards of service” to ensure the country’s energy needs are met without further complications.
