Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor, has announced the successful restoration of two generation units at the Akosombo Dam following a recent fire outbreak that caused significant disruptions to the national power grid.

This critical milestone marks a major step forward in the government’s efforts to stabilize electricity supply, which had been severely impacted after the fire forced a shutdown of the facility and removed approximately 1,000 megawatts of power from the national system.

“I’m pleased to inform you today that through emergency technical interventions and sheer determination, the first-generation unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I received confirmation from the acting grid co-MD and the VRA MD that the second unit has also been brought and is generating power. I’ve also been reliably informed that the third unit is undergoing works and that it will be brought on as soon as possible.”

The restoration process, described by officials as a complex emergency technical intervention, was achieved through the relentless efforts of engineers from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

These technical teams have remained on-site for days, working around the clock under extreme and difficult conditions to navigate the damage caused by the incident.

Following the successful activation of the first unit yesterday, the second unit was brought back online this afternoon, providing a much-needed boost to the national grid and easing the strain caused by the loss of generating capacity.

Accelerating Power Stability

The restoration of these two units is pivotal to the broader strategy to mitigate the impact of the outages that have affected households and businesses nationwide.

Akosombo, being a critical node in the national electricity transmission system, contributes a significant portion of Ghana’s base-load power.

By bringing these units back online, the country is better positioned to reduce the frequency and duration of the intermittent power supply experienced in various regions.

According to energy sector experts, the current situation highlights the importance of reserve margins, which the government is actively seeking to improve.

With thermal power plants previously being pushed to their maximum capacity to offset the Akosombo shortfall, the reactivation of these hydro units allows for a more balanced and efficient energy mix, reducing the pressure on the entire system.

A Tribute to Technical Resilience

The Minister expressed his profound gratitude to the technical teams whose dedication has been the backbone of the recovery process. Describing their commitment as “truly, truly commendable,” Hon. Jinapor highlighted that their professionalism in the face of daunting challenges has been the driving force behind the progress made so far.

He noted that despite the initial difficulty of the task, the innovative technology employed following the incident has proven successful, setting a clear path for the remaining units to be restored.

This spirit of resilience has been vital as the government continues to work toward full operational recovery, ensuring that the country’s energy infrastructure is not only restored but stabilized for the long term.

Accountability and Future Outlook

In a move toward full transparency, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition has directed the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide regular and timely updates to the public regarding areas affected by load management.

“We will not shake responsibility, we will not deceive you,” the Minister emphasized, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining clear communication with citizens as the system is stabilized.

While the immediate focus remains on bringing the third and subsequent units back to full capacity, the government continues to pursue a broader agenda of grid resilience.

This includes ongoing audits of energy installations and a strategic plan to incorporate additional capacity including solar energy and battery storage to ensure that the national grid is better equipped to handle future shocks and provide a consistent, reliable energy supply to the people of Ghana.
