Draw of Lots Decides Starlets’ Fate After Beating South Africa

Black Starlets exit CAF U-17 AFCON in Morocco in the group stage

The Black Starlets of Ghana secured their first win at the ongoing 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after beating South Africa 3-1 in their final Group D fixture on Wednesday night, but were ultimately eliminated by the cruel outcome of a draw of lots after Ghana and Algeria finished level on all tie breakers.

Needing victory to stand any chance of progressing, Ghana delivered one of their best performances of the tournament but failed to score the additional goal required to avoid the rare and dramatic tiebreak scenario.

Joseph Narbi converted two penalties in the first half, one just inside the opening ten minutes and another late in the half, to give the Starlets a commanding 2-0 lead before the break.

Just after scoring the second, Ghana had the chance to grab a third after Eric Gyamfi capitalized on a defensive lapse. His rushed effort beat the onrushing South African goalkeeper, but his strike with his weaker right foot rolled agonizingly past the post, leaving the score at 2-0.

Ghana were wasteful throughout the game as the Amajimbos, desperate to restore parity, left spaces in behind. However, Prosper Narteh Ogum’s boys could not fully take advantage of the openings that came their way.

South Africa responded midway through the second half when Thandanani Mhlongo pulled one back in the 65th minute to briefly unsettle the Ghanaian side.

The South Africans’ hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a huge blow moments later when defender Zazi Qotoyi was sent off for a last-man tackle after bringing down Eric Gyamfi, who was racing through on goal.

With numerical advantage and qualification still within reach, Ghana pushed aggressively for the third goal that would improve their chances of overtaking Algeria, who were simultaneously losing 2-1 to Senegal in the other Group D fixture.

Despite creating several opportunities, the Starlets continued to struggle with their finishing in front of goal, a problem that haunted them throughout the tournament.

However, in the second minute of additional time, substitute Augustine Appiah struck from just outside the penalty area to restore Ghana’s two-goal cushion and make it 3-1.

The goal reignited hopes inside the Ghana camp as the team now needed just one more goal to overtake Algeria on goal difference and secure automatic qualification to the quarter-finals and the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

That decisive fourth goal never arrived. When the final whistle blew, Ghana’s players and technical bench were left anxiously waiting for confirmation of the final Group D standings following Senegal’s 2-1 victory over Algeria.

Draw of Lots Favours Algeria

The results meant both Ghana and Algeria finished level on every available tie-breaker used by the Confederation of African Football.

Both nations ended the group stage with four points, a goal difference of +1, five goals scored and four goals conceded. With no separating factor remaining between the two sides, tournament regulations required a random draw of lots to determine which nation would advance as runners-up behind Senegal.

In dramatic fashion, Algeria emerged winners of the draw, sealing qualification to the quarter-finals of the U-17 AFCON as well as a place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

For Ghana, the outcome marked a heartbreaking end to their hopes of remaining in contention for the continental title despite finally registering victory in their last group game.

The Black Starlets will now shift focus to the FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification playoffs, where they still have an opportunity to secure a place at the global tournament.

However, their elimination from the U-17 AFCON will be viewed as a disappointing outcome for a side that entered the competition with high expectations and showed flashes of quality throughout the group stage campaign.

Prosper Narteh Ogum and his players will particularly look back at missed opportunities in front of goal against South Africa, knowing that one additional strike would have completely changed their fate and avoided the lottery of a draw of lots.
