Former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has described Chelsea as “a beautiful project” after speaking publicly for the first time since signing a four-year deal to take charge of the West London club as manager ahead of the new season.
The Spaniard expressed confidence in Chelsea’s long-term vision while also dismissing concerns surrounding speculation over the futures of several key players, including Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella.
Alonso arrives at Stamford Bridge with huge expectations following his impressive managerial rise in Germany, where he earned widespread praise for his tactical intelligence, calm leadership and ability to build cohesive teams.
Chelsea’s hierarchy sees him as the man capable of restoring stability and turning the club back into consistent Premier League and European contenders.
His appointment also marks a significant shift in Chelsea’s managerial structure. Alonso becomes the first leader of the technical team to officially carry the title of “manager” since José Mourinho returned for his second spell at the club in 2013.

Since Mourinho’s departure, Chelsea had appointed several “head coaches” including Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, Thomas Tuchel and others under a more modern sporting structure.
“Chelsea Is a Nice Project” – Alonso
Speaking about his decision to take over at Stamford Bridge, Alonso made it clear that the scale and ambition of the project convinced him to accept the role. “Chelsea is a nice project, it’s a very good option,” Alonso revealed.
The former Real Madrid and Liverpool FC midfielder also admitted he is eager to begin work with the squad for the upcoming campaign. “I’m excited and ready to get to work,” he stated.“It’s a beautiful project.”
Chelsea endured another inconsistent season despite heavy investment in young talent, but the club’s ownership believes Alonso is the ideal figure to guide the next phase of development.
The 44-year-old now faces the difficult task of managing expectations at one of Europe’s most demanding clubs while also handling continued transfer speculation around several influential members of the squad.
Reports in recent weeks have linked Joao Pedro with interest from FC Barcelona, while midfielder Enzo Fernández and defender Marc Cucurella have also attracted attention from top European sides following strong individual performances.

However, Alonso appeared relaxed when asked about the possibility of losing key players during the transfer window. “Other big clubs want your players, Barcelona, Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez, Cucurella,” he acknowledged. “This is football, we’re going to make a good team.”
Alonso’s response is likely to reassure Chelsea supporters concerned about the future of the squad. Rather than focusing on potential departures, the Spaniard emphasized collective improvement and team-building.
Chelsea’s recruitment strategy in recent years has centred on signing young players with long-term potential, and Alonso is expected to play a major role in shaping the development of the current group.
His arrival also signals a possible cultural reset at Stamford Bridge. While previous managers often worked within a rigid club structure, Alonso’s “manager” title suggests he could be given greater influence over football operations and squad decisions.
That added authority may prove crucial as Chelsea attempt to close the gap on rivals such as Manchester City, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC.

For now, Alonso’s words have already injected fresh optimism into the fanbase. Calm, confident and ambitious, the Spaniard appears fully aware of the pressure that comes with leading Chelsea, but equally convinced that the club’s future can be bright once again.
