Liverpool have announced the sacking of head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect, bringing an end to the Dutchman’s two-year spell at Anfield despite a successful start that included a Premier League title in his debut season.
The Merseyside club confirmed the decision in an official statement on Saturday, revealing that the process to appoint a new manager is already underway.
Slot leaves Liverpool after guiding the Reds to Champions League qualification for a second consecutive season, although the club ultimately decided a change in direction technically was necessary.
Slot arrived at Anfield from Feyenoord in June 2024 following the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp. He enjoyed an outstanding first campaign, leading Liverpool to their 20th English league title while also reaching the Carabao Cup final and the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

His remarkable debut season earned him the League Managers Association Manager of the Year award and strengthened hopes that he could build a new era of success at the club.
However, Liverpool’s fortunes dipped during the 2025-2026 campaign. While Slot secured a fifth-place finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League, the Reds failed to mount a serious title challenge, prompting the club’s hierarchy to reassess its long-term plans.
Liverpool Praise Slot’s Achievements
In a joint statement, Liverpool’s ownership paid tribute to Slot’s contribution during his time at the club, describing his impact as “significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful.”

The statement acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, saying that “it was a difficult decision to make as a club.“
Liverpool also highlighted the Dutchman’s professionalism and leadership throughout his tenure as the club’s head coach. “Our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field,” the statement read.
The club reserved special praise for Slot’s achievement in winning the Premier League title in his first season, describing it as an accomplishment that would forever secure his place in Liverpool’s history. “We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title.”
Liverpool also referenced the difficult period following the death of forward Diogo Jota, praising Slot for the compassion he demonstrated while leading the team through challenging circumstances. “The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person,” the statement added.
Club Seeking a New Direction
Despite expressing admiration for Slot’s work, Liverpool insisted the decision was based on the belief that a different approach is required to continue the club’s progression. “Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction,” the statement said.
The ownership emphasized that the decision should not be interpreted as criticism of Slot’s abilities.
“That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.”
Liverpool statement on Arne Slot
Slot departs Anfield having managed Liverpool through a period of transition following Klopp’s exit, delivering immediate silverware and restoring the club to the summit of English football during his first campaign.
While his second season failed to replicate those heights, Liverpool made it clear that his legacy remains secure. “Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.“
Liverpool are now expected to intensify their search for a successor as they prepare for a new chapter ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Andoni Iraola, who left AFC Bournemouth at the end of the season after guiding them to European qualification for the first time, has been reported to take over at Anfield despite strong interest in the Spanish coach from other teams including Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace.
