Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Men’s Player of the Year award after being named on the six-man shortlist announced this week.
The Portuguese midfielder is joined by Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Gabriel Magalhães and David Raya, as well as Manchester City pair Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki. The nominees have been recognized for their outstanding performances throughout the Premier League campaign and will compete for one of English football’s most prestigious individual honours.
Fernandes heads into the race with strong momentum after recently claiming the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year award. Historically, the FWA prize has often provided a strong indication of who could go on to secure the PFA award, which is voted for by fellow professional players.

The 31-year-old enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his career, playing a pivotal role in Manchester United’s impressive league campaign. His creativity was unmatched as he produced a Premier League record 21 assists while also scoring nine goals, finishing the season with 30 direct goal contributions and helping United secure a third-place finish.
The winner of the prestigious peer-voted award will be announced at the annual ceremony held at the Manchester Opera House on August 25.
Fernandes’ Outstanding Campaign
Fernandes’ influence stretched far beyond statistics. As club captain, he led United through a highly competitive season, consistently delivering decisive performances in crucial matches.
His vision, passing range and ability to dictate the tempo of games made him one of the most influential players in the division. Week after week, the midfielder proved to be United’s creative heartbeat, providing opportunities for teammates while contributing goals of his own.

Winning the FWA award earlier this month further highlighted the respect Fernandes has earned across the football community. With the PFA prize decided by fellow professionals, many observers believe his remarkable campaign places him among the favourites to claim the accolade.
However, competition remains fierce. Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning season has been reflected in the inclusion of three of their standout performers on the shortlist.
Midfielder Declan Rice was instrumental in controlling matches from the centre of the park, while defender Gabriel formed part of one of the league’s most resilient backlines. Goalkeeper David Raya also played a crucial role with a series of important saves throughout the campaign and winning the Golden Glove after keeping 19 clean sheets.
Strong Competition Across the League
Manchester City’s representatives add further quality to the shortlist. Haaland once again demonstrated his elite goalscoring ability, netting 27 league goals to finish as the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner.

Meanwhile, French playmaker Rayan Cherki enjoyed a breakthrough debut season in English football.
The former Lyon star quickly adapted to life in the Premier League, contributing four goals and 12 assists while becoming a key creative force for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Cherki’s impressive performances have also earned him a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. He will compete against City teammate Nico O’Reilly, Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi, Arsenal youngster Max Dowman and Liverpool prospect Rio Ngumoha.
Mainoo’s nomination follows another strong campaign in midfield, while Kroupi impressed during his debut Premier League season by scoring 13 goals in 33 appearances. Dowman and Ngumoha have also been rewarded for their rapid development and contributions at club level.
The winners of both awards will be announced during the 53rd annual PFA Awards ceremony in Manchester on 25 August. While several deserving candidates remain in contention, Fernandes’ exceptional creativity, leadership and record-breaking numbers have ensured that he enters the event as one of the strongest contenders for the game’s highest individual recognition voted for by his peers.
