The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has trained 983 officers from five regional commands on a new digital platform designed to improve fire safety compliance, streamline certification processes, and strengthen regulatory oversight across the country.
The two day capacity building programme, held at the Fire Academy and Training School (FATS) 15Th June 2026 in James Town, Accra, forms part of the Service’s broader effort to modernise fire safety administration through technology, professionalism, and innovation.
Participants were drawn from the Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Northern, and Greater Accra Regional Commands and received training on the Automated Fire Compliance and Safety System (AFCAS), a digital platform expected to transform how fire safety regulations are enforced and monitored.
The programme was organised under the theme, “Strengthening Fire Safety Compliance Through Technology, Professionalism and Digital Innovation.”

The Initiative or Program
The AFCAS system is a digital innovation designed to streamline fire safety certification processes, improve compliance monitoring, reduce administrative bottlenecks, enhance transparency, and strengthen overall service delivery.
The initiative forms part of a series of structured trainings designed to continuously upskill and upgrade the competencies of officers in the effective use and management of the AFCAS platform.
It is aimed at ensuring sustained capacity development as the Service transitions into a more digitally driven compliance and regulatory regime. Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong says the training is a significant milestone in the Service’s digital transformation agenda.
She congratulated both participants and facilitators for the successful execution of the programme and praised the officers for their dedication and active involvement throughout the sessions.

The Chief Fire Officer further noted that the effectiveness of the new system will not only depend on the technology itself but also on the commitment of officers responsible for its implementation.
“The successful implementation of AFCAS is a strategic step toward modernising fire safety administration. We are counting on officers and the public alike to support this innovation so that together we can prevent avoidable fires and protect lives and property,”.

Mad Ntow Sapong also urged them to put the knowledge acquired during the training into practice and ensure that other personnel at the station level are equipped with the necessary skills to use the platform effectively.
She encouraged the officers to serve as ambassadors of the AFCAS initiative within their respective commands and to promote its benefits among colleagues and stakeholders.

The Chief Fire Officer stressed that professionalism, teamwork, and innovation remain essential to strengthening fire safety compliance and enhancing service delivery across the country.
She noted that as the Service embraces digital solutions, officers must demonstrate a high level of responsibility and commitment to ensure the success of the initiative.
“The success of AFCAS depends not only on technology but also on the dedication and collective responsibility of officers and stakeholders,”

The training programme forms part of a structured series of interventions aimed at continuously upgrading the competencies of GNFS personnel as the Service transitions to a more technology driven regulatory system.
Purpose of the AFCAS
The launch of the AFCAS platform is expected to simplify interactions between the Fire Service and the public by making compliance procedures more accessible, responsive, and accountable.
The system will also support the Service in tracking compliance levels more effectively while improving oversight of fire safety standards in commercial, industrial, and public facilities.

The introduction of AFCAS comes at a time when institutions across Ghana are increasingly adopting digital technologies to improve operational efficiency and public service delivery.
For the Ghana National Fire Service, the digital platform represents a major step toward reducing bureaucratic processes associated with fire safety certification and inspection activities.
GNFS believes that enhanced compliance monitoring and improved access to fire safety services will contribute significantly to preventing fire outbreaks and minimizing fire related losses.
Public Advocacy and Responsibility
Mad. Ntow Sapong further called on the public, businesses, and other stakeholders to embrace the initiative and collaborate with the Fire Service in promoting safer communities. She emphasized that preventing fires requires collective action and sustained adherence to safety regulations.
According to her, public cooperation and compliance with fire safety requirements remain critical in reducing preventable fire incidents and protecting lives, property, and investments.
The AFCAS pilot phase in the Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Northern, and Greater Accra regions is expected to provide valuable insights that will guide the system’s eventual nationwide implementation.

With nearly one thousand officers now trained on the platform, the Ghana National Fire Service says it is positioning itself to deliver more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven fire safety services while strengthening compliance standards across the country.
GNFS says they expect the initiative to contribute significantly to its mandate of safeguarding lives and property through effective fire prevention, regulation, and public safety enforcement.
