Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi has called for a firm commitment to the US-Iran ceasefire deal, urging all parties to work towards laying the foundation of a “sustainable security architecture in the region.”

Speaking at a news conference for the release of a white paper on China’s vision for global governance, Wang warned of mounting instability in the international order. China’s State Council Information Office released the white paper today. According to Wang, the white paper aims to build international consensus on effective responses to global challenges, and upholding the United Nations’ authority and status is fundamental to the success of the initiative.

“New challenges in quick succession bring intertwining global crises. The ship of civilisation has entered dangerous waters with hidden reefs and violent storms.”

Wang said that disputes are revealing deep-seated conflicts with “black swan and grey rhino events,” referring to unexpected crises and overlooked but visible threats emerging continually.

Yesterday, Wang voiced China’s readiness to work with Pakistan to continue promoting talks and helping to restore peace, stability and development in the region at an early date.

He said that there should be no turning back in Iran-United States talks, still less a return to the use of force. Wang made the remarks during a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, who briefed him on the latest developments regarding the agreement on the memorandum of understanding for the first stage of negotiations between Iran and the US.

Wang emphasized that now the door to peace has opened it should not be closed again. Noting that the Middle East has suffered deeply from war and that its people deserve peace, Wang said the current consensus is far from the end point, but rather is a new starting point, adding that lasting peace in the Middle East and the Gulf region still depends on the tireless efforts of all parties.

Wang congratulated Pakistan on its efforts to help Iran and the US reach the first-phase memorandum, saying that working for peace is an international responsibility that should be shouldered by all countries. He added that since the outbreak of the conflict, China has maintained contact with all relevant parties and actively worked to stop the fighting and promote peace.

Dar thanked China for maintaining close communication with Pakistan over the past few months, and for providing valuable support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

He said that Pakistan looks forward to continuing communication and coordination with China to sustain the current momentum for peace talks and jointly play a positive role in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

China Calls For Greater Representation For Global South

At a news conference for the release of the Chinese white paper, Wang also called for greater representation for the Global South in international decision-making. He said, “Countries, whether large or small, strong or weak, developed or developing, are equal members of the international community.”

He noted that emerging markets suffer from inadequate representation at the United Nations, its authority increasingly challenged by escalating political and economic disputes worldwide.

He asserted that China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the world’s largest developing country, has consistently played an active role in global governance.

“China champions the building of a community with a shared future for humanity and takes the lead in practicing true multilateralism. It has consistently been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, a defender of the international order and a provider of public goods, while making continued efforts to improve and reform global governance.”

Wang Yi

Additionally, China’s Foreign Minister stated that in the face of global challenges, a top priority is to fulfill the obligations enshrined in the UN Charter. Wang said that China stands ready to work with other countries to reinvigorate and strengthen the UN.

He said that as the first country to sign the UN Charter, China is ready to uphold the authority of the UN by advancing the Global Governance Initiative (GGI). The Foreign Minister said that the GGI has been translated from a Chinese proposal into international practice and is increasingly demonstrating strong vitality. He added that the GGI has been endorsed by nearly 160 countries and international organizations and has received extensive and positive responses from the international community.

He also stressed the need to reinvigorate multilateralism, uphold rules and the rule of law, and improve governance capacity as the world is entering a new period of turbulence and transformation.
