Tehobo Mokoena reels away in celebration after scoring the equalizer against Czech Republic

South Africa kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive after battling to a 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second Group A match on Thursday.

A second-half penalty from Teboho Mokoena earned Bafana Bafana their first point of the tournament and their first World Cup goal in 16 years, preventing what looked set to be another painful defeat on football’s biggest stage.

The result leaves South Africa with one point from two matches following their opening-day loss to Mexico and sets up a decisive final group encounter against South Korea.

For Czechia, the draw was a missed opportunity to increase their chances of qualification to the Round of 32 after they had taken an early lead and controlled large periods of the contest.

Czechia Strike Early

The Europeans made the perfect start and went ahead after just six minutes through midfielder Michal Sadílek.

South Africa were caught cold defensively as a lapse in concentration at the heart of the backline allowed Czechia to work the ball into a dangerous area. Sadílek reacted quickest and drilled a powerful effort beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to hand his side an early advantage.

The South Africans struggled to establish any rhythm during the opening stages. Czechia moved the ball confidently and looked the more dangerous side whenever they ventured forward.

Williams was called into action on several occasions to keep his side in the contest, while South Africa found it difficult to create clear-cut opportunities in the final third.

After falling behind, Hugo Broos’ men gradually settled into the match and began to show greater attacking intent. Their pressing improved and they enjoyed more possession as the first half progressed, though Czechia remained largely comfortable heading into the break.

Mokoena Delivers from the Spot

With their World Cup campaign hanging in the balance, South Africa emerged for the second half with renewed urgency.

The introduction of fresh legs helped increase the tempo, and Bafana Bafana began asking more questions of the Czech defence. Their persistence was eventually rewarded when a goal-bound effort struck the arm of Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area.

The referee had no doubt about it and immediately pointed to the spot, giving South Africa a golden opportunity to level the scores with eight minutes of regulation time left to play.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped forward amid immense pressure. The 29-year-old showed remarkable composure, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way as he buried the penalty into the bottom right corner of the goal.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the South African supporters inside the stadium. It was a historic strike, ending a 16-year wait for a South African goal at the FIFA World Cup and breathing fresh life into their campaign.

Mokoena’s equaliser also ensured South Africa collected their first World Cup point since returning to the global tournament after a lengthy absence.

Knockout Spots in Group A Goes Down to the Wire

The closing stages saw both teams push for a winner in an entertaining contest.

Czechia attempted to restore their lead through quick transitions and set pieces, while South Africa looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack. However, neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.

Williams produced a confident display in goal for Bafana Bafana, making crucial interventions whenever Czechia threatened, while the South African defence recovered well after its early mistake.

The draw leaves Group A finely poised heading into the final round of matches. Czechia also picked up their first point at the tournament and still have work to do against co-host Mexico to guarantee their progression to the round of 32.

For South Africa, everything now hinges on their final group game against South Korea. Victory could be enough to secure a place in the Round of 32 depending on results elsewhere, while anything less would likely end their World Cup journey.

Although they were unable to claim all three points, the resilience shown by Broos’ side will give them confidence ahead of the decisive encounter. After falling behind early and staring at a second consecutive defeat, South Africa responded with character and determination.

Mokoena’s coolly taken penalty may yet prove to be one of the most important goals in Bafana Bafana’s recent history as they continue their pursuit of a place in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
