The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has taken delivery of two locomotives and 20 freight wagons in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s rail transport system and enhancing cargo operations along key economic corridors.

The development comes with the successful clearance of a locomotive designated for operations on the Tema to Mpakadan Railway Line from the Tema Harbour Port, marking another milestone in the government’s efforts to modernize Ghana’s railway sector and improve transportation infrastructure.

“This achievement marks another significant step in the Government of Ghana’s efforts to revitalize the railway sector and enhance both passenger and freight transportation across the country”.

Authorities believe the investment will help position rail transport as a viable alternative to road haulage, particularly for the movement of heavy cargo.

The delivery is expected to improve operational capacity on the Tema to Mpakadan Railway Line and support the country’s long term strategy of developing an integrated transportation network capable of driving industrial growth and economic development.

Locomotive Cleared for Deployment

The GRDA announced that the locomotive assigned to the Tema to Mpakadan Railway Line has successfully completed clearance procedures at Tema Harbour and is now ready for deployment.

As part of the process, technical experts from the Authority, port officials and representatives of the locomotive manufacturer conducted comprehensive inspections to verify the condition and operational readiness of the equipment.

The inspections were intended to ensure that the locomotive meets all technical and safety requirements before entering active service.

Officials described the successful clearance as an important step toward the full operationalization of the Tema to Mpakadan Railway Line, a project expected to improve connectivity between major commercial and industrial centres.

The railway corridor is viewed as a strategic component of Ghana’s transportation infrastructure, with the potential to facilitate trade and reduce logistical challenges associated with moving goods across the country.

Encouraging a Shift from Road to Rail

The operationalization of the railway line is expected to encourage industries and businesses to transport heavy cargo by rail rather than relying predominantly on road transportation.

For years, stakeholders in the transport sector have highlighted the benefits of rail transport in moving large volumes of goods more efficiently and at lower cost. The introduction of additional locomotives and freight wagons is expected to strengthen these efforts and provide businesses with a dependable alternative for cargo movement.

Authorities believe that increased use of rail transport will help reduce the number of heavy trucks on major highways, easing pressure on road infrastructure and lowering maintenance costs.

The move is also expected to contribute to safer transportation by reducing congestion on key road networks and limiting the wear and tear associated with frequent heavy vehicle traffic.

With the addition of 20 freight wagons, the railway sector is expected to gain increased capacity to move goods between ports, industrial facilities and inland destinations.

Improving Logistics and Connectivity

Beyond freight transportation, the new railway assets are expected to improve logistics and connectivity along the Tema to Mpakadan corridor.

The GRDA noted that the railway line will provide a more efficient, reliable and cost effective transportation option for businesses operating within the corridor.

Improved logistics services are expected to reduce transit times and enhance supply chain efficiency for industries that depend on the timely movement of goods.

The railway is also expected to strengthen links between communities, industrial zones and commercial centres, creating opportunities for increased economic activity and investment.

Transportation experts have often pointed to rail infrastructure as a critical component of national development, particularly in countries seeking to improve trade competitiveness and reduce transportation bottlenecks.

The latest investment therefore represents an important contribution to Ghana’s efforts to build a modern and diversified transportation system capable of supporting future economic growth.

Supporting Economic Development and Trade

The Ghana Railway Development Authority believes the benefits of the new locomotives and freight wagons will extend beyond transportation.

According to the Authority, improved railway services are expected to stimulate economic activity along the Tema to Mpakadan corridor by making it easier and more affordable for businesses to move goods.

The enhanced rail network is expected to support the growth of both passenger and freight services while contributing to national development objectives.

Officials also anticipate that stronger railway operations will improve Ghana’s ability to facilitate regional trade by strengthening connections between ports and inland economic centres.

GRDA New Fleets 3

As government continues to invest in transport infrastructure, the delivery of the two locomotives and 20 freight wagons is being viewed as a significant step toward achieving a more efficient and integrated logistics system.

With preparations underway for operations on the Tema to Mpakadan Railway Line, attention is increasingly turning to the role rail transport can play in boosting industrial productivity, improving supply chains and supporting Ghana’s broader economic transformation agenda.

The successful clearance of the locomotive from Tema Harbour and the arrival of additional freight assets underscore the country’s commitment to rebuilding its railway network and positioning rail transport as a key driver of economic growth and national connectivity.
