The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially renamed its national headquarters in Accra as the Jerry John Rawlings House in honour of the party’s founder and former President, Jerry John Rawlings.
The announcement was made by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, during a commemorative event held on June 22, 2026, to mark the birthday of the late statesman and celebrate his enduring contributions to the party and Ghana’s democratic development.
Addressing party members, supporters and dignitaries gathered for the occasion, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah declared that the party headquarters would henceforth bear the name of its founding leader, with corresponding changes to official party documents and correspondence.
“…All sitting here on this 22nd day of June 2026 to declare the headquarters of the National Democratic Congress, Jerry John Rawlings House. So from today, all our letterheads will be reprinted with the name Jerry John Rawlings House. Our address will change to J.J. Rawlings House”.

He added, “Thank you very much and may God bless our homeland Ghana, long live Ghana, long live NDC and long live everybody seated here.“

The renaming forms part of ongoing efforts by the governing party to preserve and institutionalize the legacy of the man widely regarded as the architect of the NDC and a central figure in Ghana’s modern political history.
Rawlings and the Birth of the NDC
Jerry John Rawlings occupies a unique place in Ghana’s political evolution. As leader of the Provisional National Defence Council, he oversaw Ghana’s transition from military rule to constitutional democracy, a process that culminated in the establishment of the Fourth Republic in 1992.
Ahead of that transition, Rawlings founded the National Democratic Congress, which became the political vehicle through which he contested and won Ghana’s first presidential election under the Fourth Republic.
His victory in the 1992 election marked a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey and laid the foundation for the constitutional order that continues to govern Ghana today.

The NDC was built around values that Rawlings consistently championed throughout his political career. These included social justice, probity, accountability and inclusive governance.
Under the NDC banner, Rawlings served two constitutional terms as President before peacefully handing over power in 2001 following the completion of his tenure. The transition was widely regarded as an important moment in strengthening Ghana’s democratic credentials and political stability.
For many within the party, Rawlings remains more than a founder. He is viewed as the ideological anchor whose principles continue to shape the identity and direction of the NDC.
Preserving a Political Legacy
Since the passing of the former President in November 2020, the NDC has taken deliberate steps to ensure that his contributions remain central to the party’s history and future.
The renaming of the party headquarters represents one of the most visible efforts to honour his memory and deepen the connection between the party and its founding ideals.
Party leaders have consistently maintained that preserving Rawlings’ legacy is essential to sustaining the values upon which the NDC was established.

The headquarters in Adabraka has long served as the nerve centre of the party’s operations, hosting national executives, strategic meetings and major political events.
By naming the facility after Rawlings, the party seeks to create a permanent reminder of his role in shaping both the NDC and Ghana’s democratic development.
The decision is also expected to reinforce the party’s commitment to the principles associated with the former President’s public service and political philosophy.
June Declared a Month of Reflection
The renaming ceremony took place as part of broader commemorative activities organized by the NDC in honour of Rawlings. In recent years, the party amended its constitution to formally recognize June 22, the birthday of the late President, as a foundational party holiday.
The entire month of June has also been designated as NDC Month, providing an opportunity for members and supporters to reflect on the party’s history and the contributions of its founder.
Activities during the month typically include public lectures, exhibitions and educational events organized in collaboration with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation.
These initiatives are intended to promote awareness of Rawlings’ role in Ghana’s political development while inspiring future generations to appreciate the values he espoused throughout his public life.
Symbolic Gesture for the Future
The renaming of the headquarters as both a symbolic and institutional gesture aimed at preserving the memory of one of Ghana’s most influential political figures.
For the NDC, the move serves as a reaffirmation of the party’s origins and an acknowledgment of the role Rawlings played in establishing a political tradition that has remained a major force in Ghanaian politics for more than three decades.

As the governing party continues to chart its future, leaders believe that anchoring its identity in the legacy of its founder will help strengthen continuity and inspire future generations of members.
The designation of the national headquarters as the Jerry John Rawlings House therefore represents more than a change of name. It is a statement about the enduring influence of a leader whose political vision helped shape the NDC, guided Ghana’s democratic transition and left a lasting imprint on the country’s political landscape.
