Enzo Maresca has officially been named the new manager of Manchester City, signing a three-year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2029, in what the club describes as a strategic appointment for its next phase of development.
The Italian tactician returns to the club where he previously worked in different coaching capacities, marking what is effectively a third spell in Manchester City’s football structure.
His appointment follows a year and half managerial stint at Chelsea, where he quickly added silverware to his résumé.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Maresca guided Chelsea to both the UEFA Conference League title and the FIFA Club World Cup in his first season, underlining his ability to deliver trophies at elite level.
His departure in the middle of his second campaign came by mutual consent, opening the door for a return to Manchester to succeed Pep Guardiola.

City’s leadership have framed the move as both a continuation and an evolution of their football philosophy, highlighting Maresca’s familiarity with the club’s structure, methodology, and long-term sporting direction. His return is viewed internally as a seamless fit rather than a disruptive transition particularly after serving as a former assistant coach to Guardiola.
“A Club I Know Very Well” — Maresca Sets Out Vision
Speaking after his appointment was confirmed, Maresca expressed both emotional attachment and professional ambition, describing the move as a natural progression in his career. “Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me,” he said.

He further emphasised the alignment between his coaching philosophy and the club’s operational structure, adding that “City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. He continued: “For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively.”
Maresca also highlighted his previous experience within the club and the expectations that come with the role. “This will be my third spell here. I know this Club, I know the demands and I know the expectations,” he noted.
City are betting on a manager who already understands the internal culture and tactical identity of the club, reducing the adaptation period that often accompanies high-level managerial changes.
Club Leadership Back Maresca as “Perfect Fit”
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak strongly endorsed the appointment, stressing that Maresca’s profile aligns closely with the club’s long-term football model.
“Enzo is someone who has always sought out opportunities to challenge himself and succeed in his managerial career. He brings a personality, passion and intelligence completely aligned to our needs.”

Al Mubarak added that Maresca’s return is a logical step in the club’s evolution and that the former Leicester City and Chelsea head coach is re-joining an organisation that is entirely in “lock-step with his ambition and hunger for achievement” and his return to Manchester City is therefore a welcome natural next step for both him and the Club.
He also highlighted tactical compatibility between coach and squad, noting: “Enzo inherits a squad and football organisation perfectly suited to reflect and evolve his brand of football, and we are all very much looking forward to seeing the impact he can have in building further on the Club’s success. Welcome home Enzo.”
Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano reinforced the club’s unified support for Maresca, revealing that he emerged as the preferred candidate after internal evaluation. “Enzo was the stand-out candidate in our considerations. We know his personality and his vision for the way football should be played. He is a man with integrity, charisma and passion,” Soriano stated.
He pointed to Maresca’s broader coaching record and past contributions within the City system, saying: “In addition to his successes at Chelsea and Leicester, his City track record speaks for itself. He managed our EDS team with distinction and was a key contributor to the historic Treble season.”
Soriano concluded by stressing institutional backing that prompted the appointment of Enzo Maresca to step in after the departure of Pep Guardiola who spent ten years at the club.
“We will ensure that he receives everything he needs to be successful here and we are all very much looking forward to seeing his positive impact on the next phase of the Club’s progress.”

A New Phase for a Dominant Project
Maresca’s appointment signals continuity in Manchester City’s broader football identity, but also a willingness to refresh leadership while maintaining tactical consistency. His previous involvement in the club’s development system and senior coaching structure is expected to ease integration with the current squad.
The club’s decision reflects confidence not only in Maresca’s tactical approach but also in his ability to operate within a high-pressure environment where success is expected immediately. With a long-term contract in place, City are clearly backing stability over experimentation.
For Maresca, the challenge is significant. He inherits a squad accustomed to winning and operating at elite European level, with expectations that stretch across domestic dominance and continental success.
Yet within the club, there is optimism that his familiarity, combined with his recent managerial success, positions him as a natural successor to continue their modern era of sustained excellence.
