Mikel Oyarzabal produced a masterclass, scoring a brace as Spain cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash, sealing a place in the last 16 with another dominant display.
The Real Sociedad forward struck once in each half, while Pedro Porro added his name to the scoresheet in between of Oyarzabal’s strikes as Luis de la Fuente’s side completely controlled proceedings from start to finish. The victory also extended Spain’s remarkable defensive record, with La Roja keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet and still yet to concede a goal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The game itself was Spain’s first knockout win at the FIFA World Cup since the 2010 final against the Netherlands in South Africa where an Andres Iniesta extra time goal secured their first ever World Cup title.
Against Austria on Thursday, Spain thought they had made the perfect start when Marc Cucurella found the net early in the contest, only for the goal to be ruled out after a foul on Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Rather than allowing the setback to disrupt their rhythm, Spain continued to dictate possession and patiently worked their way back into the contest.
Their persistence paid off midway through the opening half when Cucurella burst down the left and drilled a low cross into the six-yard box. Oyarzabal was at perfect place at the perfect time to tap home from close range and hand Spain a deserved lead after an impressive spell of sustained pressure.
Spain Dominate Contest
Spain continued to create the better opportunities as they searched for a second goal before the interval. Alex Baena came agonisingly close with a beautifully struck free kick that looked destined for the top corner before Schlager managed the slightest of touches to divert the effort onto the crossbar.

Austria’s best hope came on the counterattack as they attempted to exploit Spain’s high defensive line. However, Ralf Rangnick’s men repeatedly failed to find the decisive final pass, while Spain’s organised defence ensured goalkeeper Unai Simón was rarely troubled throughout the opening period.
Despite holding only a one-goal advantage at half-time, Spain had firmly established control of the match through their dominance in possession, crisp passing and relentless pressing.
Oyarzabal Seals Another Memorable Victory
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the 2010 World Cup champions immediately reasserting their authority. After squandering a series of promising opportunities, Spain finally doubled their advantage in the 66th minute.
Baena turned provider this time, delivering a teasing cross into the penalty area where Pedro Porro found himself unmarked. The Tottenham Hotspur full-back made no mistake, powering a header beyond Schlager to put Spain firmly in command.
Oyarzabal then completed his outstanding performance with just one minute of normal time remaining. The move mirrored Spain’s opening goal as Cucurella again surged down the left before sending a low diagonal pass across goal for the striker to tap home from close range and complete his brace.

Austria finished the match without registering a single shot on target despite attempting five efforts, underlining Spain’s complete defensive control and tactical discipline.
Records Tumble As Spain March On
The victory sends Spain into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Round of 32 encounter between Portugal and Croatia as they continue their pursuit of a second FIFA World Cup title.
Oyarzabal’s brace also lifted his tournament tally to four goals, moving him into contention for the Adidas Golden Boot. He now trails both Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi by two goals, while sitting one behind Norway striker Erling Haaland in the scoring charts.
Spain also made history before kick-off. With Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí both named in the starting line-up, La Roja became the first nation since Brazil in 1958 to field two teenagers in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, highlighting the country’s exciting blend of youth and experience.
Another significant milestone was achieved by goalkeeper Unai Simón, whose latest clean sheet saw him surpass 520 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal at the FIFA World Cup.

The 29-year-old now holds the record for the longest shutout streak in the tournament’s history, further illustrating Spain’s defensive excellence.
Having swept aside Austria with authority, Spain continue to strengthen their credentials as genuine contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With four clean sheets, an attack firing on all cylinders and Oyarzabal producing the form of his career on football’s biggest stage, La Roja head into the last 16 full of confidence and momentum.
