The executive leadership of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Mary Awusi, has initiated a comprehensive, high-level intervention within the Tema Export Processing Zone (EPZ), following a major industrial fire outbreak that tore through a critical warehouse asset belonging to the Melcom Group of Companies.
According to the GFZA, this immediate frontline field assessment was to evaluate the scope of the infrastructural destruction, establish direct communication lines with the affected corporate investors, and engage first-line emergency commanders, as the fire pushed a re-examining of internal safety standards and risk-mitigation frameworks across all industrial enclaves.
“The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of the damage, expressing the Authority’s support to the affected company, and engaging key stakeholders on measures to strengthen fire safety within the enclave. During the visit, Dr. Awusi interacted with a representative of Melcom, Mr. Govind and the Tema Regional Fire Officer, who provided updates on the incident and the emergency response efforts”

The site visit provided corporate reassurance and a pivot toward structural hardening. Accompanied by specialized directors overseeing estate management, corporate affairs, and localized regional operations, Dr. Mary Awusi audited the perimeter of the scorched logistics facility to understand the requirements for corporate business continuity.
Maintaining an active, physical presence on the ground less than twenty-four hours after the emergency crews stabilized the facility, the GFZA leadership indicated to the international and local investment communities that the government will actively cushion its registered free-zone enterprises against sudden catastrophic disruptions while maintaining serious regulatory oversight.

The executive delegation established a joint operational briefing center to receive real-time updates. Dr. Mary Awusi engaged in extensive, direct deliberations with Mr. Govind to review the immediate impact on the company’s supply chain, regional distribution networks, and localized workforce.
The management team also received detailed situational reports from the Tema Regional Fire Officer, whose specialized teams from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) had led the intense firefighting operations to contain the inferno and prevent its hazardous spread to adjacent multi-million dollar manufacturing complexes.
The collaborative briefings focused on tracing the chronological timeline of the emergency response, analyzing the structural integrity of the remaining warehouse walls, and determining how the enclave’s existing water and logistical infrastructure performed under maximum stress.
The GFZA team utilized these direct field readouts to isolate specific vulnerabilities within the current industrial layout, laying the analytical groundwork for eventual policy updates to permanently eliminate systemic risk factors across all manufacturing and warehousing clusters.
This rapid coordination highlighted a highly integrated approach to industrial crisis management, verifying that the country’s commercial regulators and emergency services are working in complete harmony to protect the operational continuity of major export-driven enterprises.
Enhancing Enclave Infrastructure
A major outcome of the field assessment was the formal introduction of a long-term strategic partnership between the Authority and national fire safety administrators. Addressing corporate leaders and emergency first responders from the Tema EPZ, Dr. Awusi made a commitment to the long-term physical resilience and financial safety of all businesses operating under the Free Zones Scheme.

The Chief Executive Officer pledged to formalize a direct operational alliance with the top command of the Ghana National Fire Service, a move aimed at structurally overhauling the enclave’s emergency readiness protocols and slashing response times during industrial accidents.
She emphasized that the preservation of world-class fire defense and emergency response capabilities must no longer be a secondary municipal service, but an indispensable component of the nation’s foreign direct investment (FDI) value proposition.
Investing heavily in localized fire hydrants, specialized safety training for factory workers, and dedicated emergency access lanes within the Tema zone, the GFZA intends to provide corporate entities with the security needed to protect their capital investments, safeguard human lives, and eliminate prolonged operational shutdowns.
To translate the lessons of the Melcom warehouse fire into permanent regulatory protections, the Ghana Free Zones Authority, in close cooperation with specialized forensic teams from the Ghana National Fire Service, formally launched an exhaustive, multi-agency investigation into the root cause of the disaster.
The joint inquiry was tasked with uncovering the exact point of origin, assessing the performance of internal building suppression systems, and analyzing whether secondary electrical or chemical factors accelerated the spread of the flames. The plan is to compile these findings into an industrial safety white paper, which will introduce mandatory prevention rules for all existing and future estate developers within the country’s special economic zones.
The executive delegation that accompanied the Chief Executive Officer during this critical assessment included Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor, the Director of Corporate Affairs, PR, and Aftercare, who will lead the post-incident client support and institutional communications strategy.

Also present were Mr. Edward Adu-Ntiamoah, the Director of the Tema Office, who oversees daily field operations within the enclave, and Mr. Benjamin Obeng, the Head of Estate and Zones, who is tasked with auditing building designs and managing structural safety rules across all properties.
Through this unified administrative front, the Corporate Affairs, PR, and Aftercare Department issued a closing directive reminding all registered businesses that the Authority will continue to enforce high safety standards to preserve a secure, world-class operational habitat for global and local investors alike.
