England midfielder Jordan Henderson has confirmed he has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a freak arm injury during the celebrations following England’s dramatic FIFA World Cup round of 16 victory over Mexico.
The 36-year-old sustained the injury after attempting to jump over the advertising hoardings to celebrate with England supporters at the end of Sunday’s thrilling 3-2 victory. Henderson slipped while climbing over the barrier and landed awkwardly on his left arm, immediately prompting concern from teammates and medical staff.
Although Henderson did not feature in the knockout clash, he joined his teammates on the pitch after the final whistle as England celebrated booking their place in the quarter-finals. The experienced midfielder was eventually stretchered off while receiving oxygen before being transported to hospital in Mexico City for further assessment.
After initial treatment, Henderson travelled to Kansas City, England’s World Cup base, where specialists carried out the operation on his broken arm. The surgery officially ends any hopes of him returning to action during the remainder of the tournament.
Henderson Thanks Medical Staff After Successful Operation
Providing an encouraging update on Wednesday, Henderson shared a photograph from hospital on Instagram alongside a positive message thanking the medical team responsible for his operation. “Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday,” Henderson wrote. “Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation,” He added.

According to reports, the operation was performed by surgeons Dr. Kenneth P. Unruh, Dr. Mark J. Winston and Dr. Kirk McCullough, with Henderson expected to begin his rehabilitation immediately.
Despite being ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup, Henderson has rejoined the England camp and will remain with the squad throughout the tournament. England manager Thomas Tuchel values the veteran midfielder’s leadership and experience, qualities that have made him one of the most influential figures in the dressing room despite his limited playing time.
The former Liverpool captain made history earlier in the competition when he came off the bench during England’s 2-0 group-stage victory over Panama, becoming the first England men’s player to appear at four FIFA World Cups. His presence has continued to provide reassurance for a relatively youthful England squad chasing World Cup glory.
England Shift Focus To Norway Showdown
England will now turn their full attention to Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami, hoping to continue their impressive run after overcoming Mexico in one of the tournament’s most entertaining knockout matches.
Henderson’s unfortunate accident has also prompted discussions within the England camp about post-match celebrations. Reports indicate Tuchel is expected to discourage players from climbing over advertising boards to celebrate with supporters in future, hoping to prevent a repeat of the bizarre incident that has sidelined one of his most experienced players.
The injury was a heartbreaking end to what had been an emotional evening for Henderson, whose leadership remains highly respected within the squad. While he will no longer contribute on the pitch, the Brentford midfielder is determined to support his teammates from the sidelines as England pursue a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
For Henderson, the focus now shifts from helping England on the field to recovering from surgery and inspiring the squad from within the camp. His latest update has reassured supporters that the operation was successful, with the veteran already looking ahead to England’s crucial quarter-final clash and backing the Three Lions in their pursuit of World Cup success.
