Agric Minister Announces Nationwide Fertiliser Distribution

New Yara Fertilisers Promise Bigger Harvests

Farmer applying fertilizer

The government has launched a nationwide fertiliser distribution programme aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, with every agricultural constituency across Ghana receiving 1,500 bags of fertiliser to support farmers ahead of the new farming season.

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, disclosed that the intervention covers all constituencies engaged in agricultural activities as part of efforts to improve access to critical farm inputs and strengthen food production.

Speaking before Parliament’s Assurance Committee on Thursday, July 9, Mr Opoku said the allocation was designed to ensure farmers across the country receive the necessary support to increase yields and enhance their livelihoods.

“We have recently distributed fertilisers to all the agricultural constituencies in this country. Every constituency has been given 1,500. It’s not even a district. Every constituency.”

The announcement comes at a time when farmers continue to highlight the importance of affordable and timely access to fertilisers as one of the major factors affecting agricultural output.

Nationwide Distribution Targets Farmers Across Ghana

According to the Agric Minister, the fertiliser distribution exercise has been extended beyond selected areas, ensuring that every farming constituency benefits from the government’s intervention.

Mr Opoku explained that while some communities were yet to receive their allocations, arrangements had already been made to complete deliveries across the country. “Those who have not received — maybe the contractors are still supplying, so they will receive theirs,” he added.

He expressed confidence that all outstanding deliveries would be completed within the stipulated period, assuring farmers that no agricultural area would be left out of the programme.

“But it is believed that by the close of next week, every district will have received the quantities we have assigned to them.”

The Minister’s assurance is expected to provide relief to farmers preparing their fields for cultivation, particularly those who depend heavily on government-supported inputs to reduce production costs.

Special Support Package for Smallholder Farmers

Beyond the constituency-level distribution, Mr Opoku revealed that the government has introduced a special arrangement aimed at supporting smallholder farmers who were previously excluded from traditional fertiliser distribution channels.

He explained that an assessment of last year’s fertiliser programme revealed that some peasant farmers did not benefit due to challenges within the existing distribution system.

“Last year we had a report that after using the traditional routes for the distribution of the fertilisers, some of the peasant farmers, smallholder farmers, were neglected. They were not served. So we said if that is the case, because they constitute the majority of our farmer population, let’s have a special dispensation for them.”

The move is expected to strengthen support for smallholder farmers, who represent a significant proportion of Ghana’s agricultural workforce and contribute substantially to food production.

Peasant Farmers Receive Increased Fertiliser Allocation

Mr Opoku further disclosed that the Peasant Farmers Association received a dedicated allocation of fertiliser under the special support programme, with the government increasing the quantity significantly this year.

According to him, the association received 15,000 bags of fertiliser last year, but the allocation has now been increased to 40,000 bags.

“And so last year we gave the Peasant Farmers Association 15,000 bags. And this year we have increased that to 40,000 bags for them.”

The Minister clarified that the 40,000 bags allocated to the association are separate from the 1,500 bags distributed to each agricultural constituency.

This means the government’s fertiliser support programme consists of two major components: the nationwide constituency allocation and the targeted intervention for vulnerable smallholder farmers.

Government Pushes for Greater Agricultural Productivity

The fertiliser distribution initiative forms part of broader measures aimed at improving agricultural productivity, reducing farmer difficulties and ensuring equitable access to farm inputs.

Agriculture remains one of Ghana’s most important economic sectors, providing employment opportunities for millions of people and contributing significantly to food security and rural development.

However, farmers have consistently raised concerns over rising production costs, particularly the high cost of fertilisers and other essential inputs.

The government believes the latest intervention will help farmers increase production, improve crop yields and contribute to efforts to strengthen Ghana’s food supply chain.

The decision to provide dedicated support for smallholder farmers also reflects concerns that previous systems may not have adequately reached some of the country’s most vulnerable agricultural communities.

With the distribution exercise ongoing, attention is now focused on ensuring that all allocated fertiliser reaches intended beneficiaries before the peak of the farming season.

As farmers prepare for increased production activities, the government says the initiative demonstrates its commitment to supporting agriculture and ensuring that farmers have access to the resources needed to improve their output.
