Dominik Szoboszlai in action for Liverpool

Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is set to extend his stay at Liverpool after reaching a verbal agreement over a new five-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until June 2031.

According to reports, the agreement is understood to be in place, with only the final contractual details remaining before the Hungarian international signs and Liverpool make the announcement official.

The new deal represents another significant step in Liverpool’s long-term planning as the club continues shaping its future under new head coach Andoni Iraola. It also reinforces the club’s desire to retain the nucleus of a squad expected to challenge for major honours in the coming seasons.

For Szoboszlai, the extension is another milestone in a Liverpool career that has steadily grown since his arrival three years ago, with the 25-year-old developing into one of the Reds’ most influential and dependable performers.

Signed From Leipzig to Strengthen Liverpool’s Midfield

Liverpool completed the signing of Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig on 2 July 2023 after triggering his £60 million release clause. The Hungary captain arrived on a five-year contract during a major midfield rebuild, becoming the club’s second signing of that summer following Alexis Mac Allister.

Before moving to Merseyside, Szoboszlai established himself as one of Europe’s brightest midfield talents during two and a half seasons with Leipzig. He made 91 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring 20 goals and providing 22 assists while helping them lift back-to-back DFB-Pokal titles in 2022 and 2023.

His arrival at Liverpool came with considerable expectations, particularly after he inherited the iconic No. 8 shirt previously worn by club legend Steven Gerrard.

Szoboszlai adapted quickly to English football, impressing with his energy, creativity, technical ability and powerful long-range shooting. His all-action displays soon made him an integral part of Liverpool’s midfield under both Jurgen Klopp and erstewhile Arne Slot, earning praise for both his attacking contributions and relentless work ethic.

The Hungarian has also continued to captain his national team, bringing leadership qualities that have become increasingly evident at club level.

Key Figure in Liverpool’s Future Plans

Since arriving at Anfield, Szoboszlai has developed into one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers. Across his first three seasons with the club, he has amassed 147 appearances, scoring 28 goals while helping Liverpool win the 2024 League Cup and the 2024-25 Premier League title which drew them level with Manchester United on 20 titles.

His performances reached another level during the 2025-26 campaign when he registered 13 goals in all competitions and was widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s standout players despite the club enduring a difficult season.

Equally comfortable operating as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or in a deeper creative role, Szoboszlai has become known for his exceptional passing range, pressing intensity and ability to score spectacular goals from distance and set pieces. He was also utilized in right-back positions at certain points during the 2025-26 season with injuries to both Connor Bradley and Jeremy Frimpong.

His versatility has also proven invaluable, with the midfielder occasionally filling in across multiple positions whenever injuries or tactical adjustments demanded it.

Liverpool’s decision to tie him down to a longer contract reflects the growing importance of his role within the squad. Despite still having time remaining on his previous deal, both club and player have reportedly moved swiftly to reach an agreement that secures his services well into the next decade.

The proposed extension is also another statement of intent from Liverpool as they seek stability during a new era under Iraola, ensuring one of the club’s midfield leaders remains central to their ambitions.

Once the remaining paperwork is completed and the contract is signed, Szoboszlai’s future will be firmly tied to Anfield until 2031, providing Liverpool supporters with further encouragement that one of their brightest stars remains fully committed to the club’s long-term project.
