Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Morgan Rogers after reaching a verbal agreement with Aston Villa in a deal worth £117 million.
The fee will make the England international the most expensive British player in football history.
The transfer surpasses the £116 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliott Anderson earlier this summer, underlining Chelsea’s determination to secure one of the Premier League’s brightest attacking talents before rival interest intensified.
According to widespread reports, Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The 23-year-old made it clear that Stamford Bridge was his preferred destination despite strong interest from Arsenal.
Rogers is currently with the Three Lions of England at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in North America where they will come up against France in the bronze medal playoff.
Chelsea accelerated negotiations with Aston Villa after learning Arsenal were preparing their own move for the versatile forward. The London club moved decisively to finalise terms, ensuring they secured one of their priority attacking targets ahead of their Premier League rivals.

A significant factor behind Rogers’ decision was a conversation with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, whose vision for the club reportedly convinced the England international that west London offered the ideal environment for the next stage of his career. Rogers will also reunite with close friend Cole Palmer, with whom he has shared a strong relationship through England’s youth ranks.
The deal represents another major statement of intent from Chelsea, who continue reshaping their squad with elite young talent capable of competing for domestic honours after missing out on a place in Europe this season. For Aston Villa, however, it marks another top level departure following the recent exit of influential midfielder Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.
Chelsea Land One of the Premier League’s Standout Attackers
Rogers arrives after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most dynamic attacking players. Comfortable on either wing, as a central attacking midfielder or as a false nine, his combination of pace, power and technical quality made him a key figure in Villa’s impressive campaign.

Last season he played a decisive role as Unai Emery’s side lifted the UEFA Europa League, delivering influential performances throughout the competition while also maintaining consistently high standards in the Premier League. Villa also finished fourth in the league to return to the Uefa Champions League though winning the the European second tier competition would have also guarantee them a place in the elite European club football competition.
His ability to carry the ball through midfield, beat defenders in one-on-one situations and create chances made him one of Villa’s most dangerous attacking outlets.
In the Premier League, Rogers finished the campaign with 11 goals and 12 assists, directly contributing to 23 league goals. Across all competitions, he registered 18 goals and 17 assists, highlighting the productivity that attracted Europe’s leading clubs. His creativity, relentless pressing and versatility have also earned him recognition within the England national team setup.
Chelsea believe those qualities make Rogers an ideal fit for Alonso’s attacking philosophy, adding another versatile option capable of operating across multiple positions while contributing both goals and assists.
From Manchester City Prospect to British Record Transfer
Rogers’ journey to becoming Britain’s most expensive footballer has been marked by patience and steady development. He began his youth career at West Bromwich Albion before joining Manchester City’s academy in 2019, where he was regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects.
Unable to break into City’s star-studded first team, he gained valuable experience during loan spells with Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool before completing a permanent move to Middlesbrough in 2023. His outstanding form in the Championship quickly caught Aston Villa’s attention.
Villa signed Rogers in January 2024, and he rapidly developed into one of the Premier League’s most influential young attackers under Emery. His performances helped the Midlands club compete strongly in domestic competition while culminating in Europa League glory last season.
Chelsea’s capture of Rogers is also a significant blow to Arsenal, who had identified him as a leading attacking target alongside Julián Álvarez, Junior Kroupi and Bradley Barcola.
Instead, it is Chelsea who appear to have won one of the biggest transfer battles of the summer, securing a player entering his prime and setting a new benchmark for British transfer fees.
