English referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from professional refereeing with immediate effect, bringing an end to an illustrious 20-year career in which he officiated some of football’s biggest domestic and international fixtures.

The 47-year-old’s final assignment came on the global stage when he took charge of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 on July 6, before deciding that the time was right to walk away from elite officiating.

Taylor leaves the game having overseen 831 matches across his career, including 432 Premier League fixtures and 668 professional matches in England.

His journey to the top began after years working as a prison officer before he joined the Football League refereeing list at the start of the 2006-07 season.

His rapid rise saw him earn promotion to the Premier League in 2010, where he established himself as one of England’s most trusted officials. During his time in the top flight, he refereed every major domestic cup final in English football including two FA Cup finals, the EFL Cup final, the Community Shield and the Championship play-off final.

Taylor, who had been a FIFA-listed referee for 14 years, also built an impressive international portfolio. He officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2020 and 2024 European Championships, and accumulated 163 international appearances.

Pressure And Scrutiny Behind Taylor’s Decision

Explaining his decision to retire, Taylor admitted that the demands placed on elite referees had played a major role in his choice to step away.

“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant. After more than two decades at the highest level, the time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”

Taylor’s career was defined by involvement in some of football’s most significant moments. He received widespread praise for his handling of Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash with Finland, which was suspended after Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

He was also selected for several major UEFA appointments, including the 2020 UEFA Super Cup final between Bayern Munich and Sevilla, the 2021 Nations League final between France and Spain, and the 2023 Europa League final between Sevilla and Roma.

However, the challenges that come with refereeing at the highest level were also evident throughout his career. Taylor endured intense criticism following the Europa League final in Budapest, where Roma manager Jose Mourinho publicly criticised his performance after Sevilla’s penalty shootout victory.

Mourinho later confronted Taylor in a car park, while the referee and his family were subjected to abuse from supporters at Budapest Airport. The incident resulted in Mourinho receiving a four-match UEFA ban.

Reflecting on the incident months later, Taylor described it as one of the most difficult experiences of his career, particularly because his family was involved.

“That was the worst situation I’ve dealt with in terms of abuse. Not only because I was travelling with family members at the time, but because it highlighted the impact people’s behaviour can have on others.”

Despite the controversy, Taylor retained the backing of football authorities, with UEFA refereeing chief Roberto Rosetti publicly supporting him after the Europa League final.

Pro Ref chief refereeing officer Howard Webb praised Taylor’s contribution, describing him as a referee who consistently earned appointments for the biggest matches.

“Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and internationally. He has repeatedly been trusted to officiate the biggest games, and we thank him for his immense contribution.”

Howard Webb, Pro Ref chief refereeing officer

Taylor’s retirement comes at a time of transition for English refereeing. Pro Ref, formerly known as the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has merged its officials into one professional group covering both the Premier League and Championship from the 2026-27 season.

The restructuring is expected to create more opportunities for emerging referees, including Farai Hallam and Tom Kirk, as English football looks to develop the next generation of match officials.

For Taylor, however, his departure marks the conclusion of a remarkable career built on consistency, resilience and the ability to operate under constant scrutiny. From domestic finals to World Cup fixtures, he leaves behind a reputation as one of England’s most experienced referees of the modern era.
