The first trailer for Chris Rock’s new film Misty Green dropped on July 22, 2026, igniting excitement across social media and film circles.

The A24-backed drama marks Rock’s return to the director’s chair for the first time since his 2014 comedy Top Five, promising a more introspective and dramatic take on Hollywood’s underbelly.

Written and directed by Rock, who also appears in the film, Misty Green stars British actress Rosalind Eleazar in the titular role as an actress grappling with the fallout of early fame and a stalled career. The story follows her character’s determined effort to rebuild her professional life after reconnecting with a figure from her past, navigating the pressures, excesses, and inequities of the entertainment industry.

The ensemble cast is stacked with heavyweight talent. Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya (reportedly playing Misty’s brother), Anna Kendrick, and Topher Grace round out key supporting roles. Chris Rock himself joins the cast alongside additional performers including Anthony Anderson, Kelli Garner, Amy Landecker, Rich Sommer, and Ice-T.

Early footage from the trailer showcases Eleazar delivering a raw, emotionally charged performance. Scenes depict her character in vulnerable moments lying in bed with a distressed expression, confronting situations with intensity, and moving through professional and personal spaces with a mix of determination and weariness.

Quick cuts reveal tense interactions, glamorous yet gritty Hollywood settings, club scenes pulsing with red lighting, market conversations, and police encounters, painting a portrait of a woman fighting systemic and personal demons for her second act.

The trailer builds a moody, dramatic atmosphere with strong visual storytelling. It highlights themes of resilience, identity, and the cost of ambition in an industry that often discards talent, particularly for women of color.

Rock’s direction appears to blend sharp dialogue with visually compelling sequences that capture both the allure and the toll of fame.

This project represents a significant evolution for Rock, known primarily for his stand-up comedy and more comedic film work. His last directorial effort, Top Five, blended humor with commentary on celebrity culture. Misty Green leans deeper into drama, allowing Rock to explore complex character studies and industry critique through a female protagonist’s lens.

Some online reactions have praised the casting and Eleazar’s presence while raising questions about a male director tackling a Black woman’s Hollywood struggles, sparking healthy debate about representation and storytelling perspectives.

Production details point to a focused, high-caliber effort. The film was announced in late 2024 as a Neon project before moving under the A24 banner, known for championing bold, original voices in cinema. Producers include Peter Rice, Chris Rock, David Worthen Brooks, James Lopez, and Tommy Oliver.

Filming locations and exact budget have not been widely disclosed, but the polished trailer suggests substantial investment in both production value and marketing.

Public Reaction

Industry observers note the timely nature of the story. In an era of #MeToo reckonings, streaming disruptions, and ongoing conversations about diversity and equity in Hollywood, Misty Green arrives as a potential commentary on these issues.

Eleazar, who has built an impressive resume with roles in projects like Missing You, seems poised for a breakout with this leading role. Her chemistry with co-stars like Driver and Kaluuya in the trailer hints at compelling interpersonal dynamics.

Social media response has been largely positive, with many users highlighting the strong cast and Eleazar’s magnetic screen presence. Comments praised pairings like Daniel Kaluuya and Adam Driver sharing the screen, while others expressed anticipation for Rock’s directorial vision.

The trailer has already amassed millions of views, signaling strong pre-release buzz for an October 2026 theatrical release.

Misty Green is also slated to make its festival debut at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, providing early critical reception and awards buzz potential.

For A24, the film fits comfortably within their slate of prestige dramas and character-driven stories that often cross over into commercial success.

Chris Rock’s multifaceted career has long balanced comedy with social commentary. From his groundbreaking stand-up specials to acting roles in films like New Jack City and Beverly Hills Cop, Rock has consistently used his platform to address race, class, and power dynamics.

Directing Misty Green allows him to step behind the camera with a more personal and dramatic project, potentially cementing a new chapter as a filmmaker.

Audiences can expect a film that mixes emotional depth with Rock’s signature wit. The trailer teases moments of levity amid heavier themes, suggesting the movie won’t be unrelentingly bleak.

Instead, it may offer a nuanced portrayal of an artist’s comeback, complete with the humor, pain, and absurdity that define Hollywood careers.

As the October release approaches, Misty Green stands as one of the more intriguing prospects of the year-a star-driven drama with an acclaimed director returning to form and a fresh lead performance at its center.
