Ghanaian dancehall superstar Shatta Wale has unveiled his latest entrepreneurial venture: WAYA, a homegrown social messaging and communication application designed specifically for African users.

The announcement, made via social media has generated significant buzz across Ghana and the diaspora, positioning the artist as a multifaceted innovator moving beyond music into the technology sector.

Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, posted an eye-catching announcement on X (formerly Twitter) featuring a vibrant pink speech bubble logo with a bold black “W.” In the post, he declared, “IT’S HAPPENING I built my own app – WAYA Calls. Chats. Voice notes. Stories. Made for us, by us.”

The message emphasized community-driven development and invited fans to participate in early testing.

The app, currently available only for Android in its beta phase, aims to provide a platform tailored to African communication preferences. Features include voice and video calls, instant messaging, voice notes, and story-sharing capabilities – elements familiar to users of global apps like WhatsApp but framed with a distinctly local identity under the hashtag #TheAfricanWayToConnect. Shatta Wale stressed his desire for Ghanaians to test and shape the product before its global rollout.

Public Reaction

Fans were encouraged to drop their Gmail addresses in the comments or send them via direct message for selection as official first testers. The response was overwhelming, with hundreds of users publicly sharing email addresses in the high-engagement thread, which quickly surpassed hundreds of thousands of views.

This open call, while exciting for supporters, has also raised cybersecurity concerns among observers, who noted the potential for phishing scams mimicking the beta invitation.

Shatta Wale, born on October 17, 1984, in Accra, has long been a dominant force in Ghanaian and African music. Starting his career under the name Bandana in the early 2000s, he gained early recognition with tracks like “Moko Hoo.” His 2014 hit “Dancehall King” catapulted him to stardom, and he has since released numerous albums, collaborated with international stars including Beyoncé on “Already,” and won multiple awards.

Beyond music, the artist has ventured into business with initiatives like the Shaxi ride-hailing service and Hotwav phone branding, demonstrating a commitment to creating economic opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

This latest move into tech reflects a growing trend among African entertainers who are leveraging their influence and resources to build digital infrastructure. Artists across the continent are increasingly investing in apps, fintech, and other platforms to address local needs and promote digital sovereignty.

Shatta Wale’s approach mirrors this shift, emphasizing “by us, for us” development that prioritizes African users’ cultural and connectivity preferences.

Following the initial announcement, Shatta Wale clarified on Facebook that WAYA had not yet been officially released. “I didn’t say I have released an app .. I said I am picking a few fans to test my incoming App.. Let’s learn how to read well please,” he stated, addressing misunderstandings and managing expectations around the beta testing phase. The clarification helped temper excitement while maintaining momentum for the project.

Reactions from fans and commentators have been largely positive, with many praising the dancehall icon for using his platform and success to innovate. Supporters highlighted the potential for job creation in Ghana’s tech space and the empowerment of local talent in software development.

Some users expressed eagerness to test the app, viewing it as a symbol of African excellence and self-reliance in the digital age.

However, not all feedback has been uniformly enthusiastic. Skeptics questioned the app’s ability to compete with established giants like WhatsApp, while others raised valid points about data privacy and security given the public nature of the tester recruitment.

Cybersecurity analysts advised caution, recommending that future sign-ups occur through official, secure channels rather than public comment sections.

Shatta Wale’s career has been marked by bold moves, controversies, and resilience. From his dramatic appearances at awards shows to building a loyal “Shatta Movement” fanbase, he has consistently challenged norms and expanded his influence.

His entry into tech comes at a time when Ghana and Africa are seeing rapid digital growth, with increasing smartphone penetration and a young, tech-savvy population hungry for relevant platforms.

Industry experts see potential in WAYA if it can differentiate itself through unique features, strong community moderation, affordable data usage optimizations for African networks, and seamless integration of local languages or cultural elements.

Success could pave the way for more celebrity-led tech initiatives across the continent.

As beta testing begins, anticipation builds for the official launch. Shatta Wale has positioned WAYA not merely as another messaging app but as a movement toward greater African digital independence. For millions of his fans, this represents more than technology – it embodies pride, innovation, and the spirit of “The African Way.”

The coming weeks will reveal how the app performs in real-world testing and whether it can translate Shatta Wale’s musical charisma into a successful digital product.

With his track record of turning bold visions into reality, many are watching closely to see if WAYA becomes the next chapter in the artist’s remarkable legacy.
