The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has disbursed GH¢219,8 to credentialed healthcare providers across the country, fulfilling its commitment to the timely reimbursement of health facilities operating under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

In a statement issued by the Authority noted that the payment, released on July 1, 2026, covers both a backlog of claims from previous years and newly vetted claims submitted for services rendered up to May 2026, pushing the total value of claims paid by the Authority this year to nearly GH¢1.2 billion.

NHIA said the disbursement forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the financial sustainability of healthcare providers nationwide, enabling them to continue delivering uninterrupted, quality care to NHIS members without the strain of delayed reimbursements weighing on their operations.

The release underscores the scale of the Authority’s financial commitments to the health sector so far this year, with the near GH¢1.2 billion paid out in claims reflecting what the statement described as NHIA’s continued commitment to supporting healthcare delivery across the country.

According to figures provided by the Authority, the GHS219.8 million disbursement was distributed across three broad categories of healthcare providers, with private healthcare facilities receiving the largest share.

Private facilities were paid GHS98.24 million, representing 44.69 percent of the total disbursement, while public healthcare facilities received GHS80.86 million, accounting for 36.78 percent. Mission and faith-based healthcare providers received the remaining GH¢40.70 million, representing 18.53 percent of the payment.

This distribution highlights the significant role private healthcare providers continue to play within Ghana’s national health insurance ecosystem, receiving the single largest portion of the latest payout even as public and mission-based facilities also secured substantial allocations to support their operations.

NHIA Boss Reaffirms Commitment to Timely Reimbursement

Commenting on the disbursement, the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring healthcare providers are reimbursed promptly, framing the payment as part of a sustained effort to strengthen the broader delivery of health services under the Scheme.

“This payment reinforces our commitment to strengthening the financial sustainability of the health facilities that serve NHIS members every day. We remain focused on ensuring that providers across the country, from our largest hospitals to the smallest CHPS compounds, receive timely and accurate reimbursement for the care they provide.”

His remarks placed particular emphasis on equity across facility types, explicitly referencing both large hospitals and the smallest Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds as beneficiaries of the Authority’s reimbursement efforts, signalling an intent to support healthcare delivery at every level of the system rather than concentrating attention on major urban facilities alone.

Beyond the immediate disbursement, Dr. Bampoe noted that the Authority continues to implement measures aimed at improving the efficiency of its claims processing systems, with a specific focus on reducing payment turnaround times for healthcare providers awaiting reimbursement. He said these efforts formed part of NHIA’s broader collaboration with healthcare providers in support of government’s vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage.

He further encouraged all credentialed healthcare providers to submit their claims promptly, accurately, and in accordance with established claims processing guidelines, arguing that adherence to these standards would facilitate more efficient vetting and support timely reimbursement in future payment cycles.

Broader Commitment to Scheme Sustainability

The NHIA closed its statement by reaffirming its broader commitment to strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme through sustainable financing mechanisms, enhanced confidence among healthcare providers, and improved access to quality healthcare services for all Ghanaians.

This framing positioned the latest disbursement not as an isolated payment, but as part of an ongoing, longer-term strategy to keep the Scheme financially credible and operationally reliable for both providers and patients.

With claims payments for the year now approaching the GHS1.2 billion mark, healthcare providers across Ghana, spanning public hospitals, private clinics and mission-based facilities, stand to benefit from improved cash flow following the clearance of both backlog and recently vetted claims.

The emphasis placed by NHIA leadership on smaller facilities such as CHPS compounds suggests particular attention to ensuring reimbursement reaches providers operating in more remote or resource-constrained settings, not just the country’s larger referral hospitals.

As the Authority continues working to streamline its claims processing systems, healthcare providers will be watching closely to see whether future disbursement cycles maintain this pace, particularly as government continues to position the National Health Insurance Scheme as a central pillar of its broader ambitions around Universal Health Coverage.
