ARB Apex Bank Assets Explode Past GH¢5.4 Billion

ARB Apex Bank

ARB Apex Bank has delivered one of its strongest financial performances in recent years, with total assets surging to an impressive GH¢5.40 billion while the institution prepares to assume a significantly expanded role under Ghana’s evolving microfinance regulatory framework.

The remarkable growth comes at a critical time for the financial sector as the Bank of Ghana pushes ahead with sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s microfinance and specialised deposit taking institutions. The reforms are expected to transform ARB Apex Bank from its traditional role of supporting rural and community banks into a central supervisory institution for the wider microfinance ecosystem.

With assets climbing by an extraordinary 136.8 percent from GH¢2.28 billion in 2024 to GH¢5.40 billion in 2025, the bank has demonstrated that it possesses the financial strength needed to support one of the most ambitious restructuring exercises in Ghana’s banking sector.

Profit Growth Reinforces Confidence

Beyond the impressive expansion in assets, ARB Apex Bank also recorded strong profitability, highlighting improved operational performance and sound financial management.

Profit Before Tax increased by 35 percent from GH¢25.44 million to GH¢34.56 million during the 2025 financial year. Even more striking was the growth in Profit After Tax, which jumped by 135.94 percent from GH¢19.91 million in 2024 to GH¢46.97 million in 2025.

The strong earnings reflected higher revenues, disciplined cost management, improved liquidity optimisation, stronger investment returns and the recognition of deferred tax assets.

Equally encouraging was the significant improvement in shareholders’ funds, which nearly doubled from GH¢49.47 million to GH¢94.83 million.

The bank also made meaningful progress in reducing the financial impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme. Accumulated losses narrowed sharply from GH¢63.34 million at the end of 2024 to GH¢28.11 million by the close of 2025.

Deposits and Investments Reach New Heights

Customer confidence also strengthened considerably during the year.

Deposits surged from GH¢2.11 billion in 2024 to GH¢5.13 billion in 2025, representing an impressive 143.1 percent increase. The sharp rise reflects stronger liquidity across the institution and growing trust among community banks and customers.

The increase in deposits provided the foundation for expanded lending and investment activities.

Loans and advances rose from GH¢121.97 million to GH¢180.34 million, representing growth of 47.9 percent. Although lower than the previous year’s exceptional expansion, the increase demonstrated the bank’s continued commitment to supporting community banking operations.

Investment assets also expanded significantly, climbing by 114.5 percent from GH¢634.49 million to GH¢1.36 billion.

Together, these developments reinforced the bank’s balance sheet while positioning it for future growth.

New Regulatory Role Signals Major Transformation

Perhaps the most significant development lies beyond the financial results.

Under the Bank of Ghana’s restructuring programme, ARB Apex Bank is expected to assume broader supervisory responsibilities across Ghana’s microfinance landscape.

Its mandate will extend beyond community banks to include microfinance banks, credit unions and other last mile financial service providers.

The institution is expected to provide technical support, operational guidance, policy coordination and capacity building to help institutions comply with the new regulatory framework.

The reforms also require all rural banks to transition into Community Banks while meeting new minimum capital requirements of GH¢5 million for existing institutions and GH¢10 million for newly established Community Banks by December 31, 2026.

These measures are intended to strengthen governance, improve financial resilience and enhance prudential standards across the sector.

Leadership Expresses Confidence

Board Chairman Daniel Ohene K. Owusu praised the dedication of shareholders, management and board members for steering the institution through a challenging but rewarding year.

According to him, their collective commitment enabled the bank to strengthen its operations despite a period marked by economic uncertainty and structural transformation.

He also stressed that the bank’s strengthened capital base would allow it to better support Community Banks, withstand future economic shocks and invest in modern technology required to execute its expanding mandate.

Managing Director Curtis William Brantuo also expressed optimism about the bank’s future.

Although no dividend was declared for the 2025 financial year because retained earnings remain negative following the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, he believes the improving financial trajectory will eventually allow the bank to reward shareholders.

He explained that under the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Institutions Act, dividends can only be declared after the bank records net positive retained earnings, a milestone management believes is achievable in the coming years.

Capital Strength and Community Impact

The bank also continued strengthening its capital position.

Stated capital increased from GH¢18.43 million to GH¢23.43 million, supported by annual capital subscriptions from Community Banks as part of a five year plan to raise GH¢25 million.

Beyond financial performance, ARB Apex Bank maintained a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Out of GH¢1.13 million donated by Community Banks, GH¢927,900 was spent on healthcare interventions, including support for Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and assistance for a kidney transplant.

The bank also donated GH¢100,000 to the national support fund established for families affected by the recent helicopter crash, while additional funds supported education and community development projects.

Outlook Remains Positive

In the future, ARB Apex Bank believes its strengthened financial position provides a solid platform for the expanded responsibilities expected under the Bank of Ghana’s reforms.

The institution plans to invest heavily in technology, governance reforms, supervisory systems and institutional capacity to support policy implementation across Ghana’s evolving microfinance sector.

With assets exceeding GH¢5.4 billion, profits rising strongly and capital steadily improving, ARB Apex Bank appears well positioned to become one of the country’s most influential financial institutions as the next chapter of Ghana’s community banking transformation unfolds.
