The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., has announced that the institution successfully raised US$75 million directly from commercial banks in Ghana to fund its ongoing gold aggregation operations.
Executed on August 3, 2026, the transaction was completed within 48 hours without requiring the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to serve as a financial intermediary.
This landmark deal signals a major shift toward a market-based financing framework, demonstrating GoldBod’s growing institutional capacity to independently mobilize private capital from local commercial financial institutions.
“He [ Sammy Gyamfi, Esq ] added that GoldBod’s growing role in the gold value chain and the mobilization of foreign exchange through gold exports has contributed significantly to the recent strengthening of the Ghana cedi, improved economic stability and the accumulation of international reserves. The US$75 million transaction on August 3, therefore, provided an important practical demonstration of the new model.”
Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod)

Historically, GoldBod operated under the legacy model inherited from the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), where it acted as a buying agent under the central bank’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
In that setup, the Bank of Ghana directly funded gold purchases as the primary owner of the asset. Under the current paradigm, GoldBod sources required liquidity through commercial banks and private entities seeking foreign exchange, decoupling its purchasing activities from central bank balance sheets while supporting the foreign currency needs of local businesses.
Operational Independence and Liquidity Modernization
Transitioning from central bank reliance directly to commercial banking liquidity represents a fundamental restructuring of Ghana’s domestic gold aggregation ecosystem.
By converting the cedi equivalent of US$75 million into dollars directly within the commercial banking sector, GoldBod confirmed that local banks possess sufficient market depth to sustain institutional gold buying without triggering foreign exchange shocks.

The Chief Executive Officer emphasized the distinction between past central bank involvement and the active market model, clarifying that the Bank of Ghana previously acted merely as an intermediary rather than funding purchases out of international reserves.
By removing central bank intermediation, GoldBod eliminates unnecessary operational friction, reduces transaction costs, and creates a transparent pathway for commercial banks to supply domestic currency in exchange for foreign currency generated through export sales.
Macroeconomic Impact and Reserve Accumulation
GoldBod’s direct participation in the commercial banking sector strengthens the overarching macroeconomic landscape, directly aiding the stabilization of the Ghana cedi.
By funneling export-generated foreign exchange into commercial institutions, GoldBod delivers crucial forex liquidity to local businesses that require hard currency for international trade and domestic supply chains.

Furthermore, this operational shift enhances the nation’s broader balance-of-payments position and international reserves profile.
GoldBod’s structured aggregation model enables continuous foreign exchange mobilization through gold exports, generating a steady influx of foreign currency that mitigates currency volatility and reinforces fiscal stability across the extractive sector ecosystem.
Sustainable Infrastructure and Policy Horizons
To ensure long-term stability as aggregation volumes grow, GoldBod is collaborating with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to establish a permanent and highly sustainable financing framework.

The ongoing review aims to refine risk-sharing mechanisms with commercial lenders and solidify institutional structures capable of scaling alongside Ghana’s expanding small-scale and large-scale mining outputs.
This emerging architecture sets a transformative benchmark for resource-rich developing nations seeking to capture value from their mineral wealth.
By blending market-driven finance with sovereign mineral aggregation, GoldBod lays the structural foundation for an independent, commercially viable entity capable of securing national resource value while building lasting financial self-reliance.
