The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed the final weekday trading session on a positive note, with market momentum strengthening as 10 listed equities recorded gains despite a decline in overall trading volume.
A total of 2,035,753 shares changed hands during the session, representing a market value of GH¢5.26 million. Compared with the previous trading session on Thursday, August 13, the latest figures showed a 12% decline in trading volume but an impressive 18% increase in turnover.
The performance highlights continued investor activity on the local bourse as selected equities attracted stronger buying interest and pushed the benchmark index higher.
Ten Stocks Lead Market Gains
The trading session ended with 29 listed equities participating in market activity, of which 10 recorded price gains while five suffered losses.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin emerged as the biggest winner of the session, recording a remarkable 9.46% increase in its share price to close at GH¢0.81 per share.
Clydestone Ghana followed closely, gaining 8.70%, while Unilever Ghana advanced by 8.47%. Hords also delivered a strong performance, climbing 8.33% by the close of trading.
The broad-based gains among several equities suggest that investor appetite remained firm across selected segments of the market, helping to sustain the upward movement of the benchmark index.
The strong showing by these counters also comes at a time when the GSE continues to record substantial year-to-date gains, reinforcing the exchange’s position as one of the strongest performing markets in the region.
GSE Composite Index Pushes Higher
The positive performance among several listed stocks translated into another gain for the GSE Composite Index.
The benchmark GSE Composite Index increased by 28.47 points, equivalent to 0.19%, to close the session at 15,307.71 points.
The latest advance takes the index’s one-week gain to 0.79%, while its four-week performance stands at an impressive 2.48%.
More significantly, the index has now recorded a staggering 74.54% gain since the beginning of the year.
The sustained rise in the benchmark index reflects the strong performance of Ghanaian equities throughout the year, with investors continuing to position themselves in selected stocks that have delivered significant returns.
The latest close above the 15,000-point mark further reinforces the strength of the market’s current upward trajectory.
Turnover Rises Despite Volume Decline
While the number of shares traded declined compared with Thursday’s session, the value of transactions increased significantly.
The market recorded 2.04 million shares traded, down 12% from the previous session. However, turnover rose by 18% to GH¢5.26 million.
The contrasting movement between volume and turnover indicates that relatively higher-value transactions contributed to the day’s improved market value.
This development could point to increased investor interest in particular counters, even as overall trading activity in terms of share volume softened.
CalBank recorded the highest trading volume during the session, with 538,525 shares changing hands.
Hords followed with 499,628 shares, while Intravenous Infusions recorded 216,943 shares. MTN Ghana also featured prominently, with 196,652 shares traded.
The concentration of trading activity in these counters demonstrates that investors continued to focus heavily on selected equities.
Financial Stocks Index Records Slight Decline
Despite the strong performance of the broader market, financial stocks experienced a marginal setback.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index declined by 0.04% to close at 8,116.98 points.
However, the index remains firmly positive over longer periods. It recorded a one-week gain of 1.19%, although its four-week performance showed a decline of 1.8%.
On a year-to-date basis, the Financial Stocks Index has gained an impressive 74.67%.
The figures show that financial stocks have remained a major contributor to the overall strength of Ghana’s equity market, even though the sector experienced a slight decline during the latest session.
Societe Generale Leads Decliners
While the market recorded a significant number of gainers, five equities ended the session lower.
Societe Generale Ghana recorded the biggest decline, falling 2.33% to close at GH¢5.86 per share.
CalBank followed with a 1.27% decline, while GCB Bank slipped by 0.21%. MTN Ghana also recorded a marginal decline of 0.14%.
The declines were relatively modest compared with the strong gains recorded by some of the leading performers, allowing the broader market to maintain its positive direction.
Market Capitalisation Nears GH¢290 Billion
The latest trading performance leaves the Ghana Stock Exchange with a market capitalisation of approximately GH¢289.4 billion, equivalent to about US$26 billion.
The size of the market reflects the growing value of listed companies and the increasing importance of equities within Ghana’s financial system.
With the Composite Index already up 74.54% year to date, investors will be closely watching whether the strong momentum can continue through the remaining trading sessions of the year.
For now, the latest session has provided another positive signal for the local equities market. Despite lower trading volume, stronger turnover, 10 advancing stocks and a fresh gain in the benchmark index have combined to keep the GSE firmly in bullish territory.
Investors Watch Next Market Moves
The performance of Dannex Ayrton Starwin, Clydestone Ghana, Unilever Ghana and Hords provided a major boost to the market, while the strong year-to-date gains recorded by the Composite Index underline the remarkable performance of Ghanaian equities.
As investors assess the next direction of the market, attention is likely to remain focused on corporate earnings, economic conditions, interest rates and developments that could influence investor confidence.
With the GSE Composite Index closing at 15,307.71 points and maintaining a year-to-date gain of more than 74%, the local stock market enters its next trading phase with considerable momentum.
