Mobile Money Fintech LTD (MMFL) has officially opened applications for the MoMo Fintech Lab, a nationwide innovation programme aimed at discovering and scaling Ghana’s next generation of fintech solutions.

The launch happened in Accra Marriott Hotel in partnership with the Bank of Ghana and key ecosystem players. The Lab is calling on students, developers, entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovators across the country to submit ideas that can solve everyday problems, expand financial access, and strengthen Ghana’s digital financial services ecosystem.

The theme “Build with MoMo” and the tagline “Build the Next Wave of Fintech,” the programme positions MoMo as more than a mobile money service. It is now opening its platform, expertise and networks to young builders who want to shape the future of finance in Ghana and beyond. Applications opened immediately after the launch and will close on September 30, 2026. Participation is free and open to individuals or teams.

This would serve as a national platform to build, test and scale the MoMo Fintech Lab which is designed as an end-to-end support system. Some selected innovators will move through a structured journey that includes a boot camp, hackathon, mentorship, incubation, and industry exposure, culminating in a National Demo Day where finalists will pitch to investors, regulators, and corporate partners.

According to MMFL, the goal is to bridge the gap between a good idea and a commercially viable product. By bringing together regulators, banks, fintechs, tech companies, academia, investors and innovation hubs, the Lab intends to create solutions that are not only creative but also responsible, compliant and scalable.

“This initiative is intended to strengthen Ghana’s Fintech talent pipeline and create a platform where innovators can build solution with real-world relevance.’’

MR. Shaibu Harun

Applicants would have to choose from four innovation tracks that reflect the most pressing needs in the market. This could be everyday payments and financial access, solutions that make sending, receiving and managing money easier for individuals, especially in underserved communities. Business and Merchant Growth Tools, tools to help SMEs digitize sales, manage inventory, access credit, and grow revenue. Trust, Security and Digital Identity, innovations that tackle fraud, improve KYC, and build confidence in digital transactions. Future Finance and Connected Ecosystems, new models in lending, savings, insurance, cross-border payments and interoperability across platforms.

The Lab will provide selected teams with access to APIs, sandbox environments, business coaching, and direct feedback from industry experts.

How to Apply Directly Through the Momo App in 5 Steps

MMFL has made the application process fully digital through the MoMo App to ensure nationwide access. To apply:  Download or open the MoMo App.  Log in with your MoMo number and PIN or use biometrics.  On the home page, click on the MoMo Fintech Lab banner.  Complete the application form with personal or team details.  Describe your fintech idea, select your innovation track, attach supporting information and submit before September 30, 2026.

The programme has strong backing from government and regulators, a signal that Ghana is prioritizing home grown innovation as a driver of financial inclusion. Mr. Owureku Asare, Head of the FinTech and Innovation Office at the Bank of Ghana, commended the initiative and emphasized the need for collaboration.

“Responsible innovation and regulatory partnership are critical to building a trusted and inclusive digital financial ecosystem. The MoMo Fintech Lab aligns with our objective to support safe, tested and customer-centric solutions.”

Mr. Asare

Delivering the keynote address, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, challenged Ghanaian innovators to think bigger.

“Ghana has the talent, the ideas and the creativity to build our own digital future. We must not continue to depend on solutions developed elsewhere. I challenge you to use the MoMo Fintech Lab to build solutions that can compete across Africa and the global digital economy.”

Hon. Samuel Goerge

His remarks reflect government’s broader push under the Digital Ghana Agenda to position the country as a leading tech and innovation hub in West Africa.

At the end of the programme, 12 finalist teams will be selected to receive a comprehensive prize and support package. Each finalist will receive a Cash awards of up to GH¢100,000 to fund product development; digital devices to support building and testing intensive boot camp and hackathon experience; mentorship from fintech founders, bank executives and tech leaders; incubation support to refine business models and go-to-market strategy.

A slot to pitch at National Demo Day before a panel of industry stakeholders prior to the commencement of the event. MMFL noted that the support does not end at Demo Day. High potential solutions will be considered for further integration with the MoMo platform and for commercial partnerships. The MoMo Fintech Lab is being delivered with support from a broad coalition of ecosystem partners driving efforts. Confirmed partners and sponsors include Hubtel, APPSN Mobile, Zenith Bank, Korba, Blue Penguin, Jumo and others.

This call is urging innovators in universities, tech hubs, and communities across all 16 regions to apply for the MoMo Fintech Lab.
