Tower’s Quiet Rise Earns AFRIMMA Rising Star Nod

Ghanaian alternative R&B singer-songwriter Tower has secured a nomination for the Rising Star Award at the 2026 African Muzik Magazine Awards, placing her among a select group of eight emerging artists from across the continent.

The recognition arrives less than a year after she began releasing music, highlighting the rapid attention her understated, emotionally precise work has attracted.

Tower, who records and performs under a single-word stage name, operates in a deliberate contrast to the high-energy, rhythm-driven sounds that often dominate African popular music conversations. Her debut single “Green,” released in February 2026, introduced an Accra-based artist more interested in emotional residue than spectacle.

The track sits in the space between calm and quiet melancholy, examining how memories of the past surface even when life appears to move forward. Critics and early listeners noted its restrained vocal delivery and focus on presence rather than resolution-an approach that prioritises honesty over immediate catchiness.

That same sensibility continues in her more recent release “Wildflower,” now available across digital platforms. Tower’s own description of her practice“writing through the quiet and whispers”captures the tone of her output.

In an industry frequently shaped by viral challenges, dance trends and high-volume promotion, her music invites slower listening. The AFRIMMA Rising Star nomination therefore feels particularly pointed: it signals institutional recognition for an artist whose appeal lies in subtlety rather than volume.

The Rising Star category this year features a geographically diverse shortlist. Tower competes alongside Florito from Angola, Nigerian acts Shoday and No 11, Rebo Tchulo of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya’s 2wentysixx, Ameka Zrai from Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa’s Ciza.

The spread reflects AFRIMMA’s continued emphasis on continent-wide discovery rather than dominance by any single market. For Ghana, the nomination adds another name to a broader 2026 showing that already includes established figures such as Black Sherif, Moliy, Eno Barony and Freda Rhymz across multiple categories.

Tower responded to the news with measured gratitude. “I’m honored to be nominated for the AFRIMMA Rising Star Award at AFRIMMA MusicFest 2026 in Dallas,” she posted. “From Ghana to the world-thank you to everyone who has believed in me, supported my music and continues to ride with me. We’re just getting started.”

The statement aligns with the unforced tone of her recorded work: appreciative without exaggeration, forward-looking without overstatement.

The awards themselves return this year after a two-year pause. Organised by Big A Entertainment, the 2026 edition combines the traditional ceremony with a music festival component and is scheduled for September 12 at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas, Texas.

Public voting remains open, giving fans a direct role in determining several outcomes, including the Rising Star recipient. In previous cycles the platform has helped amplify artists who later expanded their international reach; a win or even strong visibility in this category can accelerate that trajectory for an early-career act.

Tower’s emergence also sits within a wider Ghanaian alternative and Alté-influenced R&B conversation. While the country’s music industry is often associated with highlife, hiplife, Afrobeats and dancehall, a parallel lane of more introspective, genre-blurring songwriting has steadily gained listeners. Tower’s focus on internal emotional landscapes places her closer to that lane.

“Green” does not demand immediate movement on a dance floor; it asks for attention to the quieter shifts that occur after the music stops. That quality may limit mass-market velocity in the short term, yet it also creates a more durable foundation for an artist still building her catalogue.

Public Reaction

Industry observers tracking new Ghanaian talent have noted the speed of her recognition. Barely twelve months into public releases, she has already drawn continental attention.

The nomination does not guarantee commercial breakthroughs or future awards, but it confirms that her particular register-intimate, reflective, carefully arranged has registered beyond local circles. In a landscape where algorithmic favour often rewards the loudest or most immediately shareable material, the AFRIMMA shortlist offers a reminder that quieter artistic approaches can still travel.

As voting continues and the Dallas event approaches, Tower’s name will circulate among listeners who may not yet know her catalogue. For those who encounter “Green” or “Wildflower” for the first time through the nomination, the introduction is likely to feel consistent with the artist’s stated intent: music that operates in the quieter registers, attentive to the residual feelings people carry rather than the noise they generate.

The September 12 ceremony will reveal the winner. Until then, Tower’s place on the shortlist stands as evidence that Ghanaian alternative R&B continues to find new voices, and that those voices can still command attention on a pan-African stage.
