Ballon d'Or Trophy

The 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has been officially released by France Football, setting up a highly competitive battle for football’s most prestigious individual prize.

The nominees, announced on Tuesday, September 8, include several of the biggest names in world football, with Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal emerging among the leading contenders after outstanding campaigns for club and country.

The list features players from several of Europe’s leading clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Arsenal, while Lionel Messi also retains his place among the elite despite entering the latter stages of his career.

Mbappé is nominated after a prolific season with Real Madrid and a record-breaking World Cup campaign with France. The French forward scored 10 goals at the tournament to win the Golden Boot and took his World Cup tally to 22, making him the competition’s all-time leading scorer. He also scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid during the 2025/26 season.

The France captain has made no secret of his belief that he deserves the award. Mbappé said he would vote for himself if given the choice and argued that his individual achievements provide a strong case, while acknowledging that the final decision belongs to the journalists.

Kane enters the race with perhaps the strongest statistical case. The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals for club and country, including 61 for Bayern and 12 for England, during the period considered for the award. That output has made him the bookmakers’ favourite ahead of the announcement.

Kane, however, has taken a measured approach to his chances. The England captain said the decision is now out of his hands and described the 2025/26 campaign as his best season by far, leaving the final verdict to the voters.

Yamal is another major contender after combining individual brilliance with major honours. The Barcelona winger helped Spain win the 2026 World Cup and secured another La Liga title with Barcelona, strengthening a Ballon d’Or case that had already seen him finish second to Ousmane Dembélé in the 2025 voting.

Yamal has also insisted that he will not campaign for the award, saying he is proud of what he achieved with Barcelona and Spain and believes the journalists should decide whether his performances merit the prize.

The shortlist also includes reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, who will like to defend his crown after another impressive spell with Paris Saint-Germain, alongside PSG teammates Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Willian Pacho, Fabián Ruiz, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marquinhos and Vitinha.

Other prominent nominees include Vinicius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Rodri, Declan Rice, Bruno Fernandes, Lautaro Martínez, Luis Díaz, and Michael Olise.

There are also notable first-time or less expected names in the 30, including Pau Cubarsí, Julián Quiñones and Ferran Torres, underlining the breadth of performances considered for the award.

30-man shortlist for 2026 Ballon d’Or

The 2026 Ballon d’Or is particularly significant because the assessment covers the 2025/26 season, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup included in the evaluation. The award therefore combines club performances with what players produced on international football’s biggest stage.

Importantly, the 30 nominees will not simply be reduced to an official final top-10 shortlist. Instead, journalists representing the 100 highest-ranked nations in the FIFA men’s world ranking will select and rank their top 10 players from the 30 nominees. Points are then awarded according to each position, with the player accumulating the most points winning the award.

The ceremony will take place in London on October 26, 2026, marking the first time the Ballon d’Or ceremony has been staged in the English capital and the 70th edition of the prestigious award.

With voting yet to determine the winner, Kane’s extraordinary goal return, Mbappé’s World Cup record and Yamal’s combination of youth, individual impact and major trophies make the 2026 race particularly difficult to call. The performances have been delivered. The final verdict now belongs to the voters.
