Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has expressed his delight after completing a move to Sheffield United, with the experienced forward looking to make an immediate impact at the club while maintaining his competitive sharpness ahead of Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The 34-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Blades after becoming a free agent following the expiration of his deal with Leicester City at the end of last season.
“I’m really, really pleased to be here. The manager and the club made a great effort to get me here as quick as possible, so I want to thank everyone for their support and for them to bring me over to the Blades and hopefully we’ll have a great season.”

Ayew’s move to Sheffield United comes at an important stage of his career, with the forward seeking regular competitive football as Ghana prepares to begin its qualification journey for the 2027 AFCON later this month.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening two qualifying fixtures, making Ayew’s return to competitive football particularly significant for both player and country.
The Ghana captain was last in action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started all four of Ghana’s matches as the Black Stars progressed to the round of 32 stage. He also featured in Ghana’s goalless draw against England in the Group stage.
Wilder Hails Ayew’s Experience and Versatility
Jordan Ayew’s arrival strengthens Sheffield United’s attacking options, with manager Chris Wilder highlighting Ayew’s experience, versatility and familiarity with English football as key factors behind the decision to bring him to Bramall Lane.
“I spoke last week about being close to getting someone in from the free agent market and things did move quite quickly so I am really pleased to have Jordan with us. We’re talking about someone here with bags of experience from right at the top level of the game. Only a few months ago he was captaining Ghana in the World Cup, so he’s someone with real pedigree.”

Wilder also pointed to Ayew’s ability to operate in several attacking positions, believing his versatility could provide the team with valuable options throughout the season. “He did well at this level last season in difficult circumstances and has played all across the front positions during his career which gives us plenty of options,” he added.
The Sheffield United boss is also hoping Ayew can replicate the influence of other experienced free-agent additions who made an impact for the club last season. “We used the free market to great effect last season, and we believe Jordan can come in have an impact here just like Pat (Bamford) and Jaïro (Riedewald) did,” Wilder said.
For Ayew, the move represents an opportunity to return to a familiar environment and immediately compete for playing time.
The Ghanaian admitted that Sheffield United reminded him of his time at Crystal Palace, where he spent several seasons competing in the Premier League.
“It reminds me a bit of where I was a few years ago and that was obviously Palace, so a bit similar. I really like it and I’m really looking forward to the season and getting to know more about the club as well.”

Ayew revealed that the transfer came together quickly after Wilder contacted him while he was in Ghana last week. “It happened really, really quick because I was in Ghana and the manager called me last week,” he explained. “I didn’t think twice, I just took the opportunity, and the most important thing is for me to help the team and obviously for us to have a great season.”
The forward also made clear his determination to contribute immediately, with regular club football offering him an important platform to remain match-ready ahead of Ghana’s international commitments. “I have a lot of desire this season to make an impact and to help the team because we have a good squad and there’s a lot of positive things we can do,” Ayew said.
Ayew brings considerable experience to Sheffield United, having played more than 500 competitive matches during a career that has taken him through Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
His immediate priority will be to settle into Wilder’s squad and compete for minutes, but the timing of the move also gives Ghana a reason to welcome his return to regular competitive action.
With the Black Stars’ 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign beginning later this month, Ayew now has the opportunity to regain his rhythm at club level before turning his attention back to leading Ghana’s pursuit of another major tournament appearance.
