UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has visited Aberfan in South Wales ahead of the 60th anniversary of the mining disaster that killed 144 children and adults after a coal waste tip collapsed and engulfed a primary school and surrounding houses.

Andy Burnham laid a wreath at the village’s memorial garden alongside survivor Jeff Edwards, one of the last children rescued alive from the rubble, and Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock, paying tribute to the victims and recognising the community’s enduring grief.

The visit comes ahead of the anniversary on Wednesday, October 21, marking six decades since the tragedy that claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults on October 21, 1966.

Speaking during the visit, Andy Burnham described the disaster as one of the most horrifying tragedies the country had experienced and acknowledged the suffering endured by survivors and bereaved families.

During his visit to the memorial garden, Burnham met survivors and residents whose lives have continued to be shaped by the disaster, which destroyed Pantglas Junior School and claimed 144 lives.

The Prime Minister spent some time at the memorial before speaking with people gathered outside and visiting a nearby community centre.

He stated that the tragedy was something his parents had told him about while he was growing up, adding that his visit was intended to recognise the community and the experiences of those affected.

“The strength of the community today is something to see and something to feel,” Burnham stated.

“To say also to them, I don’t think Aberfan was treated properly by the authorities, and that also needs to be recognised. Because at a moment like this, I think all of those things need to be said and it’s right that the Prime Minister is here to say that to them.”

Aside from commemorating the victims, Burnham used the visit to highlight the importance of ensuring the safety of former mining communities, particularly those living near coal waste tips across Wales and the wider United Kingdom.

He stressed the need to ensure that all remaining tips were safe, drawing on his own connection to a former mining community in Makerfield, near Manchester.

“It’s of critical importance that we make sure that all of the remaining tips around Wales are safe indeed across the country.”

UK Prime Minister indicated that his government was providing around £140 million to the Welsh Government, which was contributing additional funding towards addressing the risks.

He also noted that an organisation is being established to manage the ongoing dangers associated with coal tips.

Schoolchildren and Royal Family Prepare to Mark Anniversary

The memorial garden, built on the site of the destroyed Pantglas School, also welcomed pupils from Caegarw Primary School in nearby Mountain Ash, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The children had arrived for a visit without knowing the prime minister would be present. Burnham spoke with several pupils about their personal connections to the tragedy and their reasons for visiting the memorial.

King Charles III, Queen Camilla and Prince William are scheduled to visit Aberfan on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary, continuing the royal family’s association with the village’s commemorations.

The late Queen Elizabeth II visited Aberfan eight times following the disaster. Her initial response to the tragedy was later described as one of the biggest regrets of her 70-year reign.

The disaster has exposed serious concerns about the management and safety of coal waste tips, particularly their proximity to homes and public buildings. It also prompted widespread public grief and questions about the responsibilities of the authorities and the National Coal Board.

Sixty years later, the Aberfan disaster remains one of the darkest chapters in Wales’ mining history, remembered for the lives lost and the resilience of the community. It also serves as a lasting reminder of the need for accountability and stronger oversight of potentially dangerous industrial sites.
