Ghanaian rapper Darlington Kwasi Agyekum, popularly known as D Cryme or Da General, has opened up about his recent university graduation, ongoing academic pursuits, political interests and new foundation in a wide-ranging interview.

The Tema-born artist, who rose to fame in the early 2010s with hits including “Kill Me Shy” and helped popularise the Twipop sound, completed a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Studies at Methodist University Ghana.

The graduation ceremony took place in early October 2026. D Cryme balanced his studies with significant student leadership roles, serving as SRC President for the 2025/2026 academic year, Head of Entertainment and brand ambassador for the university. He described the experience as enriching. “The beauty and all the diversity that comes with it and the lessons learned is beautiful,” he said. “I’m a regular student like everybody else.”

He explained how he took on the entertainment leadership position after consultation with both his management and school authorities.

“When I came, the SRC president then, they gave me that platform. But, of course, we consulted with both people, like my people and the school people. And it’s like, you know, we know your field. We know what you can do. So, that’s when I became the head of entertainment. Then I became the face and the grand ambassador of the school while I was still in it.”

The role brought benefits but also required careful management of his public image so other students did not feel sidelined. D Cryme emphasised time management as key to juggling lectures, council meetings, examinations and occasional performances. Using a proverb, he compared it to growing cocoa while also planting quicker crops like tomatoes and garden eggs on the side.

His academic path predates the degree. Around 2011 he completed a certificate course in broadcast journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism while still working in media, including as a host on 4SyteTV. He has now enrolled for a master’s degree in Public Policy and Governance. “The future is much brighter. And it’s also good to prepare before opportunity comes,” he noted. “That is why we’re still schooling. That is why we’re still acquiring knowledge.”

Public Policy Choice

The choice of public policy has fuelled questions about political ambitions. D Cryme confirmed interest but remained measured. “I have political ambitions,” he stated.

“I am more of a patriot. I would love to serve my country, but I’ll find a way to make it whereby I’ll bring everybody in there.”

He declined to name any particular party, comparing the major ones to parents who each provide different forms of care. “I love being a patriot. I love Ghana.”

Asked whether he would be willing to set aside the D Cryme stage name and signature cap for a formal political role, he framed all his identities as complementary characters in a larger story.

“Wherever we are going, we keep on building up the characters. See it as a movie. Whether it means sequels will come and all that, you will always remember the hitman or the blowman… and the villain as well. However, collectively, that is what makes the movie title what it is. Same thing with every character that you’ve seen as D-Cryme, every character that you’ve seen as Darlington, every character that you’ve seen as the General. Together, it’s going to be like a conglomerate.”

He added that growth and continuous learning drive his personal transformation. “I never stop learning. There’s growth in learning and knowing more. However, again, many years to come, this will be a reference.”

The General Foundation

On August 1, 2026, coinciding with celebrations around his 40th birthday, D Cryme launched the General Foundation. The initiative rests on four pillars: education, health, empowerment and creative arts. He stressed a practical approach beyond simple donations. “Sometimes we also have to get closer and ask them, what would you like the outsiders to know?” he said of engaging institutions. The foundation is already operational.

Reflecting on his music legacy, D Cryme addressed the Twipop genre he helped pioneer by blending vernacular with contemporary styles. He rejected ownership claims. “Twipop is not a self-possession. It’s a platform for you… It’s a genre that is for everybody.” He encouraged artists to create lasting work rather than short-lived tracks.

“You have to picture the future while composing that instant and moment… Good music is a song that stands the test of time. Any day, any time that you play it, it’s always a vibe.”

He admitted limited recent collaborations, attributing it partly to his perfectionism. “For the collaborations, I’m guilty… Because my body and my pressure, they’re hot. To the extent that when I give you a song, I follow up back with me and my head.”

Throughout the conversation D Cryme returned to themes of preparation, documentation and impact. He urged proper recording of industry history and stressed that positions are temporary while the mark left behind endures.

As he continues both music and further studies, the former SRC president presents himself as an artist deliberately expanding his capacity to serve beyond the stage.
