UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has described the 2026 United States midterm election results as an opportunity for the international community to renew efforts to end the Iran war and address mounting cost-of-living pressures.
Andy Burnham stated that the Democratic Party’s gains offered governments a chance to refocus on pressing global challenges and work together to resolve the conflict while easing the economic difficulties facing ordinary people.
“President Trump has accepted the results, and I feel the world has an opportunity now to unite around the issue that is affecting us all, and that’s the cost of living.”

The 2026 midterm elections delivered a significant setback to Trump’s Republican Party, with Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress after making gains in traditionally Republican states.
The results hand Democrats greater legislative influence, allowing them to intensify scrutiny of the administration, challenge legislation and play a bigger role in congressional decisions over the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency.
The US President acknowledged the Democratic victories, stating, “Congratulations to the Democrats, they did a good job,” adding that the party had been pursuing the victory for 11 years.
However, Donald Trump sought to distance himself from the Republican losses, arguing that he was not on the ballot despite repeatedly urging supporters during campaign rallies to treat the elections as a personal referendum on his presidency.
His initial response also included criticism of Republican candidates, while a subsequent social media post featured a red cap bearing the word “VETO,” signalling his intention to oppose Democratic legislative initiatives.
UK Prime Minister Links Iran War to Rising Living Costs

Prime Minister Andy Burnham believes that the government now has an opportunity to redirect international attention towards resolving conflicts and addressing the economic pressures affecting households.
He noted that the cost of living had remained central to his government’s priority but acknowledged that domestic measures alone could not sufficiently ease financial pressures while major international conflicts continued.
“That has been the issue that I have put front and centre in my first three months in Downing Street, and we’ve made moves. But I can’t get people’s cost of living pressures down until the conflict in the Middle East is resolved, and the conflict in Ukraine started by Russia.”

He added, “these are the things we have to focus on now, and I hope the world has a moment to do that. And certainly, in my calls with leaders, that is what I will be asking everybody to do.”
Andy Burnham maintained, “People want to see the world coming together and focusing on the things that matter to people.”
UK Calls for De-escalation and Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Also. Andy Burnham stressed the need to prevent further escalation in the Middle East, pledging to pursue diplomatic efforts towards ending the Iran conflict.
Asked whether he feared the US election results could trigger further escalation, he reiterated that his priority would be to support de-escalation and secure a resolution to the conflict.
“Well, I’ll be working for de-escalation to make it very clear. You know, we want to see a resolution, the Strait of Hormuz fully opened again. That’s what we will be working towards.”

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical international shipping route, particularly for global energy supplies. Its disruption has intensified concerns over energy costs, supply chains and the wider economic consequences of the conflict.
UK Prime Minister’s remarks shed more light on Britain’s wider diplomatic efforts to restore freedom of navigation through the waterway and reduce the economic pressures associated with the conflict.
