NPP Rejects Alan’s Claim That The Party Has Been Hijacked By Select Few

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has rejected claims by its former presidential aspirant, Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen that the party has been hijacked by selected few.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, September 26, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Koduah, dismissed the assertion.

Ladies and gentlemen, the leadership of the Party equally disagrees with assertions made by Mr. Kyerematen on page eight (8) of his resignation address that ‘the Party has been hijacked by a selected group of Party leaders and elders, and government appointees behind the curtain power brokers”.

Justin Koduah

According Mr. Koduah guided by facts and data, the leadership of the Party disagrees entirely with this assertion of Mr. Alan Kyerematen. He noted that historically, the selection of flagbearers for political parties in Ghana had been the preserve of a privileged few until the New Patriotic Party took the bold decision to decentralize the process by expanding its electoral college to enfranchise some One Hundred and Six Thousand, Five-Hundred and Ninety (106,590) delegates in 2010.

He added that currently, about Two Hundred Thousand (200,000) delegates would be voting to select the Party’s next flagbearer election relative to the estimated One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety-Eight delegates (1,998) who did same in 1992.

“Clearly, the quantum leap to Two Hundred Thousand (200,000) delegates in 2023 underscores the decentralization of power to all Party stakeholders and defeats the assertion that the Party has been hijacked by a privileged few”.

Koduah Rejects Claims Of Intimidations

The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic, Justin Koduah Frimpong  further rubbished Mr. Kyerematen’s claims of intimidation against his supporters emphasizing that government appointees including cabinet ministers who openly declared support for him are still at post.

“In reference to Mr Kyerematen’s concerns, which include allegations of intimidation against his supporters, it is noteworthy that certain government appointees, including cabinet ministers, who openly declared their support for him are still at post and have never been intimidated,”

On Monday, September 25, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen announced his resignation from the party and his decision to run as an independent during a news conference.

According to Alan, the party has been “hijacked by a selected group” of Party leaders and elders, as well as behind-the-scenes power brokers appointed by the Government.

In his speech, Mr Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry of the President Akuffo Addo administration, promised to create and head a new MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE in Ghana to fulfil his aim of running as an independent candidate.

The brand logo for the MOVEMENT is the Monarch Butterfly, which politically symbolizes change and transformation, hope, and positivity. It also communicates strength, endurance, spirituality, and trust, which are key traits that he said he cherishes as a Political Leader.

The New Patriotic Party is expected to hold its National Delegates Conference on November 4 to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 General Elections.

The party has declared its commitment to break the ‘8’ year cycle in the 2024 General Election that has characterized election under the 4th Republic since 1992.
