The search for a running mate for Ghana’s Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, who is now the Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the upcoming 2024 elections, has set heads spinning.
Several names have been circulating, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister for Energy; Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu; and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
While most are lobbying and working it out behind the scenes, Nana Akomea has boldly availed himself on a live interview showing his interest in the position. As a great contender promising to deliver victory, his open confession has sparked discussions about his chances and the potential implications for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“If he[Bawumia] chooses me, victory is assured. But it would be unfortunate if the selection of a running mate degenerates into chaos.”
Nana Akomea
Born on August 5, 1961, in Nsutam, Ghana, Akomea is a communication expert. He earned a Post Graduate Degree in Communication Studies from the University of Ghana in 1991. Akomea served as the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party and held ministerial roles in information (2003-2005) and Manpower Development and Employment (2007-2009). He has been in the political limelight since he entered Parliament in 1996.
Nana Akomea, as a seasoned politician and communications expert, brings a wealth of experience to the table. His background also includes serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Company (STC) . With a deep understanding of political communication and strategy, Akomea has played a crucial role in shaping the party’s messaging.
Also, he is the former Okaikwei South Member of Parliament and served as the campaign spokesperson for Dr Bawumia during the flagbearer contest. He thus believes he possesses the qualifications and capabilities necessary for the position.
The Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) has, however, emphasized the importance of giving Vice President Bawumia the time and space to recover from the contest and make an informed decision in consultation with the party.
Long Years Of Service Card
One key factor working in Akomea’s favor is his extensive experience within the party apparatus. Having held leadership positions and contributed to the NPP’s communication machinery, he is well-versed in navigating the intricacies of party politics. His ability to articulate the party’s message and engage with diverse audiences may position him as a strategic choice for Bawumia’s running mate.
Furthermore, Akomea’s long-standing commitment to the NPP could be seen as an asset, demonstrating loyalty and dedication. In a political landscape where trust and party cohesion are vital, having a running mate with a solid party background may resonate positively with party members, supporters and sympathizers.
Regional balance is often a crucial consideration in selecting running mates in Ghanaian politics. Akomea, a native of the Eastern Region, could potentially contribute to regional balancing on the ticket. The strategic distribution of political positions across various regions is a common practice to foster inclusivity and broaden the party’s appeal.
In addition, Nana Akomea is loved across the political divide with his reserved and honorable politicking over the years.
However, challenges may also arise in Akomea’s bid for the running mate position. His prolonged absence from active politics and frontline positions could be viewed as a potential drawback. Ghanaian politics is very fluid, and staying connected with the grassroots and contemporary political issues is essential for maintaining relevance.
Also given the conditions surrounding Ashanti Region as a stronghold that must be kept for the NPP into the 2024 General Elections, Nana Akomea, a son of the Eastern soils, might not be a favorite for this particular election.
Notwithstanding, the role of a running mate extends beyond regional considerations and party loyalty.
Bawumia, as the Presidential Candidate, may prioritize qualities such as competence, expertise, and the ability to complement his leadership style. The running mate should be someone capable of contributing meaningfully to governance, policy formulation, effective administration and ,for now, deliver victory in 2024. Perhaps, this will be what Nana Akomea promises.
While Nana Akomea’s chances as Bawumia’s running mate are subject to various considerations, including internal party dynamics and public reception, his candidacy highlights the intricate process of selecting individuals who can contribute meaningfully to the governance and development of the country.
