President Akufo-Addo Charges Africans To Shape Continent’s Destiny

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized the importance of Africans taking charge of their narrative and shaping the destiny of the continent.

In a post on his Facebook page following his address at the Full Circle Africa Economic Conference in Accra, he urged Africans to define themselves based on their own perspectives, rather than allowing external narratives to dictate their identity.

“We must help make Africa the place for investment, progress and prosperity, and not from where our youth flee in the hope of accessing the mirage of a better life in Europe or the Americas.

“We want to derive maximum dividends from our relations with the African Diaspora in mutually beneficial co-operation, and as partners for shared growth and development.”

The President called for concerted efforts to transform Africa into a hub for investment, progress, and prosperity, discouraging the trend of African youth seeking a purportedly better life in Europe or the Americas. He advocated for mutually beneficial cooperation with the African Diaspora to achieve shared growth and development.

“We, thus cannot allow temporary poverty and under-development to be the narrative of Africa, a continent which is so blessed with natural and human resources. We cannot allow our collective fate to be decided by exogenous shocks thousands and thousands of miles away.

“I can never get away from the oft-cited quote of that famous Jamaican Reggae artist, Peter Tosh, because it very much sums up who we are, and what our aspirations should be. He said, ‘don’t care where you come from, as long as you’re a black man, you’re an African.’ Let us all remember that the destiny of all black people, no matter where they are in the world, is bound up with Africa.”

The Mass Exodus of African Youth to the West: A Complex Challenge

The mass migration of African youth to the West is a multifaceted issue that stems from a combination of socio-economic challenges, political instability, and aspirations for a better life. While seeking improved opportunities, education, and living conditions, young Africans embark on perilous journeys, often attempting to reach Europe or America. This phenomenon has become a pressing concern, prompting a closer examination of its root causes and potential solutions.

One of the primary drivers of this migration is the economic disparity prevalent in many African countries. High unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, and inadequate infrastructure contribute to a sense of hopelessness among the youth. The perception of better prospects in Western countries, where economic opportunities and social amenities seem more abundant, fuels the desire to migrate.

Political instability and conflict in various African regions also play a significant role. Societal unrest, lack of security, and human rights abuses create an environment where young people feel compelled to seek refuge elsewhere. The absence of stable governance and the potential for a better life in politically stable Western nations become strong motivating factors for migration.

The influence of media and the interconnectedness of the world contribute to the dissemination of an idealized image of life in the West. The portrayal of Western societies as havens of prosperity, equal opportunities, and success cultivates the aspiration to escape from perceived hardships in Africa. This narrative, coupled with the desire for personal growth and development, propels many young Africans to undertake the arduous journey.

The perilous nature of these journeys, often involving dangerous sea crossings or treacherous desert routes, underscores the desperation and determination of those seeking a brighter future. The harrowing experiences faced during migration, including human trafficking, exploitation, and the risk of loss of life, highlight the severity of the challenges faced by African youth.

Addressing the mass exodus requires a comprehensive approach that tackles the root causes. Efforts to improve economic opportunities, invest in education, and foster political stability are crucial. Additionally, creating awareness about the risks and challenges associated with irregular migration is essential to dissuade young people from embarking on dangerous journeys.

International collaboration is key to providing support and resources for African nations to implement sustainable development initiatives. Western nations can contribute by promoting fair trade, fostering partnerships, and offering avenues for legal migration. Empowering young Africans with the skills and resources needed for success within their own communities can be a transformative step toward mitigating the urge to migrate.
